The hit series Pachinko made its much-anticipated return on August 23, and once again, it’s earning praise for its impressive production and storytelling. Among the familiar faces returning this season is Lee Min Ho, reprising his role as Koh Hansu. This character, with his intricate and often polarizing personality, continues to leave viewers divided. Known for his standout roles in Boys Over Flowers and The Heirs, Lee Min Ho steps into new territory this season, taking on the role of a father—a first in his nearly twenty-year acting career.
Koh Hansu’s journey gets even more complicated in Season 2 as he takes on the role of a father to his son, Noa. Fans will remember Koh Hansu as the businessman in Japan-occupied Korea who fell for Sunja (played by Kim Min Ha), a seemingly ordinary woman who proves to be anything but. In this new season, viewers learn that despite the distance and the passage of time, Koh Hansu never truly left Sunja and their child. This storyline marks a significant moment for Lee Min Ho, as he portrays a father for the first time, adding another layer of depth to his character.
Lee Min Ho’s Preparation for His First Father Role
In an exclusive interview, Lee Min Ho opened up about what it was like to step into this new role. Despite his extensive experience in the industry, playing a father was something entirely new for him. He admitted that this was an emotional territory he hadn’t explored before.
“Because it was a stage of life and emotions that I haven’t personally felt, I turned to documentaries and YouTube videos about fatherhood,” Lee Min Ho shared.
To get a better grasp of the father-son dynamic, Lee Min Ho immersed himself in content that featured real conversations between fathers and their sons.
“I looked for content about conversations shared between fathers and sons in that age range,” he explained.
This research helped him bring authenticity and emotional depth to his portrayal of Koh Hansu as a father, showing the pressures and complexities that come with the role.
