Singer and composer Adnan Sami recently opened up about the frightening health scare that completely changed his life. The musician, known for hit songs like Lift Karadey and Tera Chehra, revealed that a doctor once told him he had only six months to live because of his weight. At his heaviest, Sami weighed around 230 kg and was mostly confined to his bed. The warning came during a medical check-up at London’s Cromwell Hospital, where he was with his father, who was battling pancreatic cancer. What made the moment even harder was that the doctor delivered the news right in front of his father. That emotional experience became the turning point that pushed him to lose approximately 120 kg without any surgery.
The Doctor’s Warning That Shocked Everyone
Adnan Sami recalled the moment during an interview with Zoom, describing it as a huge shock. The doctor gave him a direct and frightening prognosis: if he continued living the same way, his parents could find him dead within six months. The singer said the news was difficult enough to process on its own, but having his father sit beside him made it far more painful.
“It was a huge jolt. What made it even worse was that my father was sitting next to me when the doctor said it. I was more upset that he said it in front of my father because your loved ones react far more emotionally than you do. They love you and care for you.”
The singer admitted that his first reaction was to brush off what the doctor had said. He tried to convince himself and his father that the doctor was being overly dramatic. He told his father, “The doctor is being overdramatic”. But his father did not agree.
His Father’s Emotional Reaction Changed Everything
Adnan Sami’s father, who was already fighting his own battle with pancreatic cancer, looked at his son and gave him a reality check. He said, “Really? Do you really think so? I can see it myself. He’s not talking nonsense. He’s right”. The singer said his father’s response stayed with him and became the push he desperately needed.
That night, his father broke down in tears and pleaded with Adnan not to put his parents through the pain of outliving their own child. Watching his father become so emotional forced Adnan to confront the seriousness of his condition. He made a promise right there.
“My father became so emotional that I promised him, ‘I’ll fix it. I’ll fix this.’ That promise set everything in motion. It was a Herculean task, and I never imagined I’d end up losing so much weight.”
Losing 120 Kg Without Any Surgery
Adnan Sami eventually lost around 120 kg, bringing his weight down from 230 kg to approximately 110 kg. He has consistently maintained that his transformation was achieved without bariatric surgery or liposuction. Over the years, many people speculated that he had undergone weight-loss surgeries, but the singer strongly denied those claims.
“A lot of people said that. I was like, ‘Really?’ Whenever you achieve something, there will always be naysayers. Usually, they’re the people who are envious and try to belittle your efforts. They’ll say, ‘Oh, he had a lot of surgeries.’ It’s nonsense.”
He explained that his weight loss came from strict lifestyle changes, not any medical procedure. The secret behind his transformation was a high-protein diet designed by his nutritionist in Houston. The diet excluded bread, rice, sugar, oil, and alcohol. He followed this plan with complete discipline.
The Difficult Journey and Slow Progress
Losing such a large amount of weight was far from easy. Adnan Sami admitted that the process involved intense physical effort, strict food restrictions, and many moments of discouragement. He recalled working extremely hard, only to see very small changes on the weighing scale.
“I worked like hell. There were many times when I was working out, starving myself, depriving myself of so much, and after a whole week of intense effort, I’d realise I’d lost only half a kilo. You think, ‘All that effort for this?’ It’s incredibly disheartening. But then you remind yourself that sometimes you hit a plateau. You have to keep going. It takes a lot of determination and willpower.”
Despite the slow progress, he pushed forward. The results came quickly in the beginning—he lost 20 kg in the very first month. That early success gave him the momentum he needed to continue his journey. But the months that followed were brutal, and he often questioned whether all the effort was worth it.
The T-Shirt That Kept Him Going
Adnan Sami also shared a simple but powerful story about what kept him motivated. While shopping at a mall, he fell in love with an XL-sized shirt even though he was a 9XL at the time. His mother told him that even his arm would not fit in that shirt back then. But whenever he felt he had lost some weight, he would try on that shirt, sometimes two or three times a night, to see if it fit.
One day, around 3 am, he tried it on and it fit perfectly. He called his father and jumped with happiness. That moment of victory reminded him that hard work pays off. He said, “This is how I lost weight, through a lot of hard work. There’s no shortcut in life”.
