Ramayana Cast and Characters
Ramayana: Part One brings together a large ensemble cast from Hindi and South Indian cinema. Ranbir Kapoor plays Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi plays Sita, and Yash plays Ravana. Sunny Deol takes on the role of Hanuman, while Ravie Dubey plays Lakshman.
The supporting cast includes Arun Govil as King Dasharath, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha, Sheeba Chaddha, Vivek Oberoi as Vidyutjihva, and Kunal Kapoor. Arun Govil is widely known for playing Lord Rama in the classic Ramanand Sagar television series Ramayan, which adds a special connection for longtime fans of the story.
Production Team Behind Ramayana
Nitesh Tiwari directs the film. Namit Malhotra produces it through Prime Focus Studios, in collaboration with DNEG and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations. DNEG is an eight-time Oscar-winning visual effects company handling a major part of the film’s VFX work.
The music for Ramayana is composed by A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer. The two composers have been working on the score in London. A.R. Rahman described the collaboration as “terrifying for both of us” because of the scale of the project.
The action choreography is handled by Terry Notary and Guy Norris, while Ramsey Avery and Ravi Bansal lead the production design.
Ramayana Budget and Scale
Ramayana is being made as a two-part epic with a combined budget of nearly $500 million (over Rs 4,000 crore), making it the biggest film franchise ever mounted in India. Yash has said that the budget figure includes both films and the promotional costs for Hollywood.
Ranbir Kapoor has compared the scale of the project to Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings. He revealed that the two-part saga contains nearly six hours of epic visuals and action sequences.
The Hindi version of Part One has a runtime of 3 hours and 15 minutes, while the English version, titled Ramayana: Rise of a Legend, runs 2 hours and 45 minutes. The English cut reportedly omits the songs and trims certain portions for international audiences.

Fan Reactions to the Release Date Announcement
The announcement on Navratri brought a wave of reactions on social media. Many fans expressed excitement about the film finally having a confirmed date. Some users praised the new poster for its grand visuals, while others noted that the Navratri timing felt meaningful for a story rooted in Indian mythology.
Earlier, when the film’s trailer was released in July 2026, it sparked mixed reactions online. Some viewers praised Yash’s look as Ravana, with one fan writing on X: “Yash is the main highlight of the Ramayana trailer”. Others raised concerns about the VFX quality, comparing some character looks to “wax statues” and questioning whether the final film would match the scale promised by the makers.
“Ramayana is not just a film for us. It is a responsibility. We have all come together with one vision.”
This is how Yash described the project during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2026.
Why Ramayana Is a Big Deal for Indian Cinema
Ramayana is positioned as one of the most ambitious Indian productions ever attempted. The combination of Nitesh Tiwari’s direction, DNEG’s VFX work, and music from A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer gives the project a global scale that few Indian films have matched.
The decision to release the film in five Indian languages and multiple international markets on the same day shows the makers’ intent to reach the widest possible audience. Sony Pictures’ involvement as the global distributor adds another layer of international reach.
The film was shot for IMAX, and the makers have described it as “the most immersive 3D cinematic experience ever”. For audiences who grew up with the story of Ramayana, this adaptation brings the epic to the big screen with a scale that has not been seen before in Indian cinema.
