Apple TV+ has officially canceled the thriller series The Last Frontier after its inaugural 10-episode run, a decision first reported by Variety and confirmed by major industry trade publications. The series, which starred Jason Clarke, premiered on October 10, 2025, and concluded its first and only season on December 5, 2025.
Premise and Critical Reception
The Last Frontier followed Frank Remnick (Jason Clarke), a U.S. Marshal stationed in a remote Alaskan region. His quiet jurisdiction is thrown into chaos when a prison transport plane crashes, releasing dozens of dangerous inmates and unveiling a larger conspiracy. Despite a promising premise, the series received mixed reviews from critics. The Hollywood Reporter noted that the show “squander[ed] most of the entertainment value of its premise,” finding it to be a “lumbering and padded journey” that stretched a thin story across its 10-episode length. The series holds a 46% critics score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with the consensus stating it “squander[ed] a crackerjack premise” and “stretches on for too long to sustain momentum”.
Cast and Creative Team
The series featured a notable ensemble cast led by Jason Clarke. He was joined by Dominic Cooper as the escaped CIA asset Levi “Havlock” Hartman, and Haley Bennett as CIA agent Sidney Scofield. The main cast also included Simone Kessell, Dallas Goldtooth, Tait Blum, and award-winning actress Alfre Woodard.
The Last Frontier was created by Jon Bokenkamp, known for The Blacklist, and Richard DโOvidio. They served as executive producers alongside Clarke, Laura Benson, director Sam Hargrave, Glenn Kessler, and Albert Kim. The series was produced by Apple Studios.
โWeโve discussed many avenues to take with the second season, but weโve pretty much exhausted a lot of stories in Alaska,โ co-creator Richard DโOvidio told Variety in a post-finale interview. His co-creator Jon Bokenkamp added, โWeโve certainly talked a lot about where they end up, maybe a beach somewhereโ.
These comments, made shortly before the cancellation announcement, indicate the creative team had preliminary ideas for expanding the story beyond its Alaskan setting.
A Swift Cancellation and Streaming Strategy
The decision to cancel the series came swiftly after its season one finale on December 5, with the news breaking in mid-December. While Apple does not publicly release viewership data for its streaming titles, the move aligns with a tightening industry approach where new series are often required to demonstrate a strong audience connection quickly to justify further investment.
All 10 episodes of The Last Frontier remain available for streaming globally on Apple TV+.
