The first season of FXโs โLove Storyโ just wrapped up on March 26, 2026, telling the sad story of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette. The show became FXโs most-watched limited series on Hulu and Disney+, pulling in over 52 million hours watched during its run. Now, viewers are looking ahead to what comes next.
Show creator Connor Hines has already shared his thoughts on a possible second season. He told Vanity Fair that if the show continues, he would like to focus on another famous couple with a difficult love story. His top choice? Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Hines said they โhave the right intensityโ for the show.
The Real Story Behind Taylor and Burtonโs Turbulent Romance
The relationship between Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton started in 1962 on the set of the movie โCleopatra.โ At that time, both were married to other people. Taylor was on her fourth marriage to Eddie Fisher, and Burton was with his first wife Sybil Burton. The two actors fell in love while filming, and their affair became big news around the world.
The Vatican even spoke out against their relationship, but that did not stop them. They got married on March 15, 1964. Over the next years, they worked together on 11 films, including the famous 1966 movie โWhoโs Afraid of Virginia Woolf?โ.
But their marriage was not peaceful. They fought often, and alcohol played a big role in their problems. They separated in 1974, right after their 10th wedding anniversary. They remarried in a secret ceremony on October 10, 1975, but that marriage ended in the summer of 1976.
What Made Their Love Story So Dramatic
The Taylor-Burton relationship had many ups and downs that would make for good television. Both stars came into the marriage with children from previous relationships. Taylor had three kids, and Burton had two, including โGreyโs Anatomyโ actress Kate Burton. Together, they also adopted a daughter named Maria Burton.
Their relationship was full of expensive gifts, big fights, and public drama. They bought and sold famous jewelry pieces, including the 69-carat Taylor-Burton diamond. They also made several movies together, which meant they spent a lot of time working side by side even when their personal life was troubled.
When Taylor died in 2011 at age 79, she had been married eight times to seven men. Burton had died earlier in 1984. Despite their divorce, many people believe they remained important to each other until the end.
Other Couples the Show Could Explore
While Taylor and Burton seem to be Hinesโ first choice, there are other famous couples from Hollywood history with dramatic stories. The New York Daily News suggested several other pairs that could fit the showโs format.
Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall met when Bacall was only 19 and Bogart was 44. They fell in love while filming โTo Have and To Have Notโ in 1943. They got married in 1945 and stayed together until Bogart died of cancer in 1957. They made five movies together and had two children.
Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh had a complicated relationship that started in 1937. Both were married to other people when they began their affair. They married in 1940 but faced many problems. Leigh had mental health issues that were later diagnosed as bipolar disorder. She also had tuberculosis. Their marriage ended in 1960, and Leigh died in 1967.
Natalie Wood and Robert Wagner also had a famous Hollywood love story. They married, divorced, and then remarried. But their story is best known for Woodโs death in 1981, which remains a mystery to this day.

What to Expect From Season 2
FX has not officially said yes to a second season of โLove Storyโ yet. But given how well the first season did, many experts think renewal will happen. Since the show is an anthology series like โAmerican Crime Storyโ and โAmerican Horror Story,โ it would focus on a completely new couple with a new cast.
If the show gets picked up for another season, viewers can likely expect it to arrive sometime in 2027. The new season would not continue the JFK Jr. and Carolyn Bessette story since their tale ended with their deaths in 1999.
For now, fans can watch all nine episodes of the first season on Hulu and Disney+. There is also a podcast called โLove Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette Official Podcastโ that has interviews with the cast and crew.
