The world of Bosch is expanding with a major new addition. Rosanna Arquette has joined the cast of Prime Video’s Ballard for its upcoming second season. The veteran actress will play Jenny Ballard, the estranged mother of Maggie Q’s Detective Renée Ballard. This casting news marks a significant step in exploring the backstory of the show’s lead character and is one of the first major updates for the new season since its renewal.
Rosanna Arquette’s Role as Jenny Ballard
Rosanna Arquette will have a recurring role in Ballard Season 2 as Jenny Ballard. In the original book series by Michael Connelly, Renée Ballard’s mother is named Makani. The character’s story is a traumatic cornerstone of Renée’s past. In the novels, Makani leaves her husband and young daughter after the drowning death of Renée’s father, an event that profoundly shapes the detective’s life.
While the television adaptation has changed the mother’s name to Jenny, sources indicate the character’s core emotional story remains the same. Jenny is described as a damaged free spirit, a woman who has spent her life trying to fill a personal void she could never fully understand. Her arrival in Renée’s life promises to unpack deep-seated personal history.
Michael Connelly, the executive producer and author of the Ballard novels, stated: “It’s a great privilege to have my characters brought to life on screen season after season, and it’s thanks to the fans continuing to tune in that we’re able to do so. I’m especially grateful to Maggie Q for embodying Renee so perfectly”.
The Road to Season 2 and Season 1 Recap
Ballard was officially renewed for a second season in October 2025, continuing the story from the popular Bosch and Bosch: Legacy franchises. The first season, which premiered on July 9, 2025, was a major success for Prime Video. All ten episodes were released at once, and the show quickly generated 2.5 billion minutes viewed in the United States within its first few weeks. It consistently charted on Nielsen’s weekly Top 10 streaming rankings and even reached the number four spot.
The series follows Detective Renée Ballard, who is placed in charge of the LAPD’s new, underfunded cold case unit after facing professional punishment. With a team of volunteers and a retired Harry Bosch (Titus Welliver) as an occasional ally, she works to solve long-forgotten crimes. The first season ended on a major cliffhanger. After solving a high-profile case, Ballard was arrested as the prime suspect in the death of Detective Robert Olivas, the colleague who assaulted her. Season 2 will need to resolve this intense situation while introducing Arquette’s Jenny.
