In the Big Brother house, housemate Sam opened up about his personal journey, sharing the story of how he came out at age 15 during a conversation with fellow contestant Tate. The chat, which highlighted the importance of queer representation, has resonated with viewers for its honesty and respect.

The Conversation That Opened Up

The meaningful exchange began when Tate asked Sam about his coming out experience and his thoughts on marriage. Sam, a 27-year-old Zumba instructor from Skipton, did not hesitate to share his story, creating a space for genuine connection.

Sam recalled knowing he was different from a young age. “I remember being a kid, and, like, always just liked boys. I knew it but when I tried, when I expressed it, they were like, Oh, you don’t think about that at your age, kind of thing. So I just put it back,” he shared. “I was 15 when I came out,” he revealed.

When the topic shifted to marriage, Sam explained that his perspective had changed over time. “No. Like I rememberโ€ฆ when I was being a kidโ€ฆwhen I was a kid, I thought you could only get married to a girl. So I thought, I don’t wanna get married because I don’t wanna be a man. So I never had the option and, then I got older and I was like ‘ahh’,” he told Tate.

A Shift in Visibility

Tate responded thoughtfully to Sam’s story, acknowledging that societal understanding has evolved. “Like, 10, 15 years ago then, even. It was different then. Different even now to, like, now I’d like think it’d be easier for folk to come out nowadays,” he said.

He added that greater visibility has played a key role: “It’s just so much more discussed and prevalent in the culture now than it ever was. You know, like f*cking Pride flags, on, like, walkways and that. Like, it’s, there was none.” Sam agreed, noting that queer representation is indeed more visible now compared to a decade ago.

Sam’s Identity in the House

This season of Big Brother UK, which launched on September 28, 2025, features its most diverse LGBTQ+ lineup since its ITV reboot. Sam is a significant part of that representation. On Instagram, he lists his pronouns as he/him, they/them and she/her.

In a separate conversation with housemate George, Sam further opened up about his gender identity. When asked what his gender is, Sam explained, “Just what anybody wants. I just basically live life as me. And if anyone wants to call me something they can, I’m not bothered really. It’s more like everyone else, make them feel comfortable and I just live as myself, really.”

He shared that his self-understanding has grown over time. “[I’ve been] more vocal about it in the past few years, more visually like that the past few years. I’ve always seen myself as that since I was a kid but I didn’t know what that meant and how to articulate that until I got the vocabulary and got in the community and stuff,” Sam shared.

Viewer Reactions to the Moment

The respectful conversation between Sam and Tate did not go unnoticed by fans of the show. On social media, one viewer praised the dialogue, writing that it was “great” to see. Another specifically commended Tate, noting, “Tate feels like such a secure man and unlike most of the straight men we’ve had in the last few seasons not toxic.”

This positive reception highlights how such genuine moments between housemates can impact the audience, fostering a greater understanding of LGBTQ+ experiences.

A Growing Connection for Tate

While building a supportive friendship with Sam, Tate has also sparked speculation about a potential romantic connection with another housemate. In the first week, he was heard chatting with Sam about 22-year-old graduate Nancy from Glasgow.

Sam asked him directly, “Do you like Nancy?” to which Tate replied, “I don’t know yet.” When Sam described Nancy as “gorge,” Tate agreed, adding, “She’s unreal.” These brief comments were enough to get viewers talking on social media, with one noting, “Tate and Nancy seem to be getting along very well.”

Big Brother’s LGBTQ+ Legacy

Big Brother UK has a long history of groundbreaking LGBTQ+ representation. The show’s first openly trans winner was Nadia Almada in 2004. The current 2025 season continues this legacy with several queer housemates besides Sam.

The lineup includes Zelah, a 25-year-old trans personal trainer from South London; Gani, a 39-year-old pizza shop manager from Bromley who identifies as bisexual; and Nancy, who is pansexual. Zelah has spoken about his hope that his presence on the show will help demonstrate that being transgender is not a choice.
