CBS made a decisive move on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, announcing that the new police drama Boston Blue will return for a second season. The renewal comes remarkably early, issued just six episodes into the show’s first season. This quick decision by the network signals strong confidence in the Blue Bloods spinoff, which has become the most-watched new series of the fall television season.

The show’s second season is officially scheduled for the 2026-2027 broadcast season. Alongside Boston Blue, CBS also renewed its other Friday night rookie drama, Sheriff Country, a spinoff of Fire Country. Both shows premiered on October 17, 2025, and have helped CBS dominate Friday nights in total viewers.

Why CBS Renewed the Show So Quickly

The network’s early renewal is directly tied to the show’s strong performance with audiences. According to detailed Nielsen ratings, Boston Blue is averaging 8 million cross-platform viewers for each episode when counting viewership over seven days. This makes it the top new network show of the season so far.

A key metric for CBS is the show’s streaming performance on Paramount+. The network reports that streaming viewership for the Friday night time slot has seen a massive 87% increase compared to the previous fall season, when Blue Bloods occupied the slot. This demonstrates the show’s ability to attract a modern streaming audience while maintaining a strong traditional broadcast following.

โ€œTwo new shows on Friday night have become instant hits, with audiences quickly embracing Boston Blue and Sheriff Country across broadcast and streaming,โ€ said Amy Reisenbach, President of CBS Entertainment. โ€œThese early renewals reflect the power of character-driven storytelling, compelling narratives and the exceptional talent on both sides of the camera that make these series truly stand out.โ€

Cast and Crew Celebrate the Good News

The show’s star and executive producer, Donnie Wahlberg, shared the renewal announcement on his Instagram. He posted a screenshot of the news with a large blue “Thank you!” written across it. In another post on his Instagram stories, he celebrated with the caption, “Brooklyn and Beantown ride again. So thankful to all of our cast, crew and viewers!”.

Other cast members joined the celebration online. Maggie Lawson, who plays Superintendent Sarah Silver, reposted Wahlberg’s news with celebratory emojis. Gloria Reuben, who plays District Attorney Mae Silver, marked the occasion by posting a festive video of fireworks on her Instagram. Marcus Scribner (Jonah Silver) also reshared the renewal announcement on his social media.

The series was developed by Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, who also serve as executive producers and showrunners. They executive produce alongside Wahlberg, and the legendary Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed for Jerry Bruckheimer Television. The production is a collaboration between CBS Studios and Jerry Bruckheimer Television.

What to Expect for the Rest of Season 1

Fans do not have to wait until 2026 for more Boston Blue. The first season is planned for a substantial 20 episodes. New episodes continue to air on Fridays at 10:00 PM Eastern/Pacific Time on CBS.

The current broadcast schedule includes a midseason finale on Friday, December 19, 2025. After that episode, the show will take a break. It is scheduled to return with new episodes on Friday, February 27, 2026. This means there are still many new stories to tell about Danny Reagan’s life in Boston before the season two production begins.

The main cast will all return, led by Donnie Wahlberg reprising his iconic role as Detective Danny Reagan. His partner, Detective Lena Silver, is played by Sonequa Martin-Green. The series also stars Gloria Reuben as Mae Silver, Maggie Lawson as Sarah Silver, Marcus Scribner as Jonah Silver, Mika Amonsen as Sean Reagan, and Ernie Hudson as Reverend Edwin Peters.

The show has also featured crossover appearances from beloved Blue Bloods characters, creating a bridge for fans of the original series. Bridget Moynahan reprised her role as Erin Reagan in the series premiere. Marisa Ramirez has guest-starred in multiple episodes as Detective Maria Baez, Danny’s former NYPD partner and current romantic interest. Their long-distance relationship between New York and Boston has been a ongoing story point.
