Career Resurgence After Oscar Win
Brendan Fraser, who won the 2023 Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance in The Whale, continues to reflect on the transformative impact of this career milestone. During an appearance at Deadline’s Red Sea Studio in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, Fraser opened up about his latest ventures, including the Japanese comedy Rental Family and the World War II drama Pressure.
Speaking about his Oscar win, Fraser described the experience as surreal, revealing that the recognition still feels almost unreal.
“I don’t think I’ll ever stop pinching myself,” he said. “Even when people recognize me on the street, I feel like I’m still being reminded, ‘Fraser, get back in the dish pit—you’ve got work to do.’”
Japanese Comedy Project
Fraser recently completed filming Rental Family, a comedy directed by Hikari, in Japan. The film centers around an American actor who takes on roles with a Japanese “rental family” company, portraying family members in strangers’ lives.
Discussing the project, Fraser called it a unique and rewarding experience, praising the meticulousness of Japanese filmmaking and the talent involved in the production.
“I couldn’t resist making this film. The talent pool is extensive, and behind the camera, everything is meticulous. It was a trailblazing opportunity.”
He also shared that director Hikari visited him for Thanksgiving and mentioned that the studio cut of the film is nearing completion. Fraser emphasized how this experience allowed him to immerse himself in a different filmmaking culture, calling it “refreshing and new.”
Portraying Dwight D. Eisenhower in WWII Drama
In addition to Rental Family, Fraser has taken on the role of Dwight D. Eisenhower in the film Pressure. This World War II drama focuses on the tense decision-making process leading up to D-Day. Reflecting on the weight of portraying such a historical figure, Fraser explained his approach:
“To play Eisenhower? Take a deep breath, absorb everything about him, and then forget it. It’s not about a history lesson—it’s about capturing the pressure cooker of that pivotal moment.”
The film aims to bring to life the intensity and gravity of one of history’s most significant decisions, offering audiences a glimpse into the immense responsibility carried by Eisenhower during World War II.

Brendan Fraser’s career resurgence remains an inspiring example of resilience and talent. His choice of diverse roles, from the introspective drama of The Whale to the cultural exploration in Rental Family and the historical gravitas of Pressure, highlights his versatility and commitment to storytelling.
Fraser’s journey continues to captivate audiences, with fans eagerly awaiting the release of these two highly-anticipated films.
