The new crime drama CIA is officially coming back for another season. CBS made the announcement on March 23, 2026, giving the show a Season 2 renewal only one month after its first episode aired on February 23, 2026. This quick decision shows the network’s confidence in the FBI franchise expansion.

The series premiere drew 8.4 million viewers across broadcast and streaming platforms within seven days. Through its first three episodes, time period viewership improved by 39% compared to last fall.

What ‘CIA’ Is About

CIA follows an unlikely partnership between two very different agents. Nick Gehlfuss plays FBI Special Agent Bill Goodman, a by-the-book professional who follows all the rules. Tom Ellis plays CIA Agent Colin Glass, a secretive and roguish operative who operates in the shadows. Together, they work on a clandestine task force in New York City.

The official description explains that the two agents work covert operations, uncovering international plots, terrorist cells, and geopolitical secrets. The show explores how Bill learns the rules of this murky world while Colin guides him through spy games where their work keeps America safe, even if no one will ever know what they did in the shadows.

The cast also includes Natalee Linez as CIA analyst Gina Gosian and Necar Zadegan as Nikki Reynard, the deputy chief of the CIA’s New York branch. Characters from the original FBI series have also appeared, including Jeremy Sisto, James Chen, Missy Peregrym, and Alana de la Garza.

Behind the Scenes

CIA comes from the team behind the successful FBI franchise. Dick Wolf, who created the original series, serves as an executive producer along with Peter Jankowski, David Hudgins, Nicole Perlman, David Chasteen, Anastasia Puglisi, Paul Cabbad, Ken Girotti, and Mike Weiss.

The series is produced by Universal Television, a division of Universal Studio Group, in association with Wolf Entertainment and CBS Studios. This marks the latest expansion of the FBI universe after the network canceled FBI: Most Wanted and FBI: International last year.

What This Means for CBS

The renewal comes as CBS builds its lineup for the 2026-2027 season. CIA joins a growing list of renewed shows that includes FBI (Season 9), NCIS (Season 24), Tracker (Season 4), Fire Country (Season 5), and Ghosts (Season 6). The network has also ordered new series Cupertino and Einstein for next season.

The quick renewal signals that CBS sees CIA as a reliable piece of its schedule. The show airs Mondays at 10 p.m. ET/PT on CBS and streams on Paramount+. Premium plan subscribers can watch live and on-demand, while Essential subscribers get access the day after episodes air.
