The Story Behind Chad Powers

Chad Powers stars Glen Powell as Russ Holliday, a talented college quarterback whose career ends in disgrace after a major mistake during a championship game. Eight years later, desperate for a second chance, he disguises himself with a wig and prosthetics. He takes on the new identity of “Chad Powers,” a friendly and oddball walk-on trying to make the team at the struggling South Georgia Catfish football program.

The official description for the series premiere, titled “1st Quarter,” sets the stage: โ€œYears after bad boy QB Russ Holliday nuked his college football career, he attempts to walk on to the struggling South Georgia Catfish program disguised as a young man named Chad Powers.โ€

The character of Chad Powers was originally created by former NFL quarterback Eli Manning. In 2022, for his ESPN+ show Eli’s Places, Manning went undercover in a elaborate disguise to try out as a walk-on at Penn State. The viral prank video, where he presented himself as “Chad Powers,” caught the attention of Glen Powell and became the inspiration for this series.

“Watching the original Chad Powersโ€ฆ one of the things that really surprised me is Eli’s ability to improv,” Glen Powell told The Hollywood Reporter. “And there was a a lot of weird heart in the character.”

Both Eli and Peyton Manning serve as executive producers on the series through their company, Omaha Productions, bringing a layer of football authenticity to the comedy.

Meet the Cast and Characters

Glen Powell leads the cast as the dual characters of Russ Holliday and his alter ego, Chad Powers. Powell also co-created the series and wrote the first episode. He is joined by a strong supporting cast that includes Steve Zahn as Jake Hudson, a teacher and mentor to the team, and Toby Huss as Mike Holliday, Russ’s father.

Other key cast members are Perry Mattfeld as Ricky, a fellow athlete, Clayne Crawford as Coach Dobbs, and Frankie A. Rodriguez as Danny, a teammate. The series also features cameo appearances from well-known sports personalities like ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit and Chris Fowler.

The series aims to balance genuine football action with its comedic story. The goal was to make the sports elements feel real and exciting for viewers.

“What makes this show different is we wanted this thing to be funny and heartfelt but to have the football be legit,” Powell said in an interview.

For fans of college football, comedies, or Glen Powell, Chad Powers offers a new show to add to your watchlist. The first two episodes are now available for streaming on Hulu.
