The upcoming Friday the 13th series is not the simple slasher show some might expect. Brad Caleb Kane, the creator and showrunner of Crystal Lake, has shared new details about the show’s tone, calling it a psychological thriller designed to explore deep themes. The series finished filming in late 2025 and is set to premiere in 2026.
A New Vision for an Old Legend
Brad Caleb Kane, who recently worked on HBO’s It: Welcome to Derry, is steering the famous horror franchise in a fresh direction. He explained his unique approach in a recent interview.
โIn many ways, itโs a psychological thriller. Itโs a paranoid โ70s thriller,โ Kane stated. โIt has all of the DNA of a slasher without quite being a slasher. There are rivers of blood in the show. There are very, I think, ingenious kill sequences and deaths and murders, but itโs all done in service of character and theme and place and time.โ
Kane says he looked back at the era that produced the original 1980 film for inspiration. He wanted to understand the cultural forces at work at that time. He described the late 1970s as a period defined by public mistrust of institutions and a powerful movement for women’s liberation. Kane intends for Crystal Lake to engage with these historical themes, setting it apart from more straightforward horror stories.
Diving into the Core Cast
The series acts as a prequel to the original 1980 movie. It will explore the origins of the Voorhees family tragedy that made Camp Crystal Lake infamous.
The central role of Pamela Voorhees, Jason’s grieving mother who becomes the first film’s killer, is played by Linda Cardellini. The actress has received three Emmy nominations for her past work. Kane could not praise her performance highly enough.
โSheโs gonna shock and surprise a lot of people. I think sheโs gonna get a lot of attention for this role. Sheโs inconceivably brilliant in it. I canโt really say any more,โ he said.
The role of a young Jason Voorhees will be played by Callum Vinson in a recurring guest role. The main cast also includes several other key figures in the town’s story:
- William Catlett as Levon Brooks
- Devin Kessler as Briana Brooks
- Cameron Scoggins as Dorf
- Gwendolyn Sundstrom as Grace
Behind the Scenes: A Troubled Path to Production
The journey to bring Crystal Lake to the screen has been long and faced several major changes. The project was first announced in October 2022 with Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) as the original showrunner.
Fuller left the series in May 2024 after creative differences with the studio, A24, which wanted to take the story in a different direction. Shortly after, veteran horror writer Kevin Williamson (Scream), who was set to write an episode, also departed the project.
Brad Caleb Kane was officially named the new showrunner in August 2024. Under his leadership, the eight-episode first season moved forward with a reported budget of approximately $10 million per episode.

Filming Wraps on Historic Ground
Production finally began under the working title Mama’s Boy on June 20, 2025, in New Jersey. Filming took place in several locations, including West Milford and Jersey City.
In a major move for fans, the production returned to the iconic Camp No-Be-Bo-Sco in Blairstown, New Jersey. This is the exact same location used for the original 1980 Friday the 13th film. Shooting at the real camp adds a layer of authenticity to the prequel’s story.
Filming officially concluded in late October 2025, moving the project into the post-production phase.
When and Where to Watch Crystal Lake
The series is produced by A24 for the streaming service Peacock. It is scheduled to premiere sometime in 2026, though an exact release date has not been announced.
For international audiences, the series has been acquired by Sky for broadcast in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It will also be available for streaming on Now in those regions.
