Dakota Johnson recently shared her excitement about working with Chris Evans and Pedro Pascal in the upcoming romantic comedy Materialists. The film, directed by Celine Song, is set to release on June 13, 2025. Johnson called the experience “magical” and praised her co-stars for their humor and chemistry.

The movie follows Lucy, a successful New York City matchmaker played by Johnson, who finds herself torn between a wealthy suitor (Pedro Pascal) and her imperfect ex (Chris Evans). The trailer shows Lucy struggling to balance her professional success with her messy love life.

“Chris and Pedro were wonderful. Theyโ€™re both pretty funny dudes. They both really make me laugh,” Johnson told Deadline. “I really make Chris laugh, which I like a lot. And Pedro and I were friends before, so just being able to hang out all day was really fun.”

Materialists marks Celine Song‘s second directorial project after her critically acclaimed debut, Past Lives. The film is produced by A24, the same studio behind Past Lives, and features a mix of romance, humor, and emotional depth.

The trailer gives a glimpse of Lucyโ€™s glamorous yet complicated life. She matches couples for a living but struggles to find love herself. Pascalโ€™s character, a wealthy businessman, seems like the perfect match, while Evans plays her struggling actor ex who still has feelings for her.

“When I see your face, I see wrinkles and children that look like you,” Evansโ€™ character tells Lucy in the trailer, trying to win her back. Meanwhile, Pascalโ€™s character charms her with grand gestures, including a huge bouquet of red flowers.

Johnson also praised director Celine Song for her unique approach to filmmaking. “It almost felt like she was in the scenes with me,” Johnson said. “Sheโ€™s really a true real deal filmmaker.” Song, known for her poetic storytelling, brings a fresh take to the rom-com genre with Materialists.

The film was shot in New York City during spring, which Johnson described as another magical aspect of the production. “Filming in New York in the spring was just magical,” she said. Fans of romantic comedies can expect a mix of nostalgia and modern storytelling when the movie hits theaters.

Materialists also stars Zoรซ Winters, Dasha Nekrasova, and Marin Ireland in supporting roles. The trailer has already generated buzz for its witty dialogue, stylish visuals, and strong performances from the lead actors.

With its star-studded cast and talented director, Materialists is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated romantic comedies of 2025. Fans can watch the trailer online to get a first look at the chemistry between Johnson, Evans, and Pascal.
