The second season of Daredevil: Born Again arrived on March 24, 2026, and fans immediately started looking for connections to the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. One question that surfaced quickly was whether Julia Louis-Dreyfus would appear as Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, the CIA director who has been a key player in the MCU since The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.

The showrunner has now given a clear answer about the character’s involvement in the season.

What the Showrunner Said About Val’s Presence in Season 2

Dario Scardapane, the showrunner for Daredevil: Born Again, confirmed that the series does include a connection to Val, but not in the way many expected. While Julia Louis-Dreyfus does not appear on screen, her presence is felt through a telephone call that carries significant weight in the storyline.

Scardapane explained that the writers specifically built a character to exist within Val’s world. Matthew Lillard plays a character named Mr. Charles, a CIA agent who appears during a key scene involving Mayor Wilson Fisk. During that scene, Mr. Charles makes a phone call to someone referred to as “Miss de Fontaine,” and that single call changes the political situation in Fisk’s favor.

“So, building Mr. Charles as somebody who lives in the Val world, we wanted to make that connection. So, that’s why that’s on the other end of the phone call.” – Dario Scardapane, Showrunner

Scardapane also shared his personal interest in bringing Val into the series more directly. He mentioned having ideas for how the character could fit into the street-level world of Hell’s Kitchen, but acknowledged that those decisions come from higher up at Marvel Studios.

“For me, personally, away from everything MCU, I would love her to be part of our world. There’s a story in the back of my head I would love to tell you, but I don’t know, those choices aren’t mine.” – Dario Scardapane

Sana Amanat, executive producer on the series, added that having these connections matters for future storytelling possibilities.

“Yeah, it’s always nice to have that connective tissue, because you never know. So yes, as fans, we would love it.” – Sana Amanat, Executive Producer

How the Connection to Val Plays Out in the Story

The Val connection appears in the first episode of Season 2. Wilson Fisk, now serving as Mayor of New York, faces pressure from the state government after a cargo ship capsizes near Red Hook. The lieutenant governor and attorney general show up in Fisk’s office to enforce oversight on his operations.

That is when Mr. Charles walks in. After making one phone call to Val, the attorney general backs down completely. The scene establishes that Fisk’s operation now has backing from the CIA, specifically from the director herself.

The guns being smuggled through Fisk’s free port are not just for his police force. The involvement of Mr. Charles and Val suggests the weapons are intended for a CIA operation, adding a new layer to the conflict between Matt Murdock and the Mayor.

Why Julia Louis-Dreyfus Does Not Physically Appear in Born Again Season 2

The decision to keep Val off screen in Daredevil: Born Again comes down to how Marvel Studios handles major crossover characters. While the series is officially part of the MCU, the creative team wanted to focus on the street-level story in Hell’s Kitchen.

Scardapane described the approach during a previous interview, explaining that the show exists in its own corner of New York.

“The joke we make is, ‘Oh, those guys are uptown – we’re downtown!’ We kind of have a pocket that’s in this world of Hell’s Kitchen, in this world of New York.” – Dario Scardapane

This approach lets the series keep its identity while still acknowledging the larger universe. Val’s phone call serves as a reminder that Fisk’s actions have consequences beyond city politics, but it does not pull focus away from Matt Murdock and his fight against the Kingpin.

What This Means for Future Crossovers

The connection to Val through Mr. Charles opens up possibilities for future seasons. Scardapane made it clear that he would be interested in telling a story that brings the CIA director into Daredevil’s world. Whether that happens depends on Marvel Studios’ overall plans for the character.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus has been a recurring presence in the MCU since 2021. Her character, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, leads the CIA and has been recruiting operatives like John Walker and Yelena Belova. Her role in Thunderbolts expanded on her plans and motivations.

In previous interviews, Louis-Dreyfus has expressed interest in continuing with Marvel. She told Jimmy Kimmel that while she was not appearing in Avengers: Doomsday, she was “very happy to be a part of the Marvel universe” and was “not allowed to say anything beyond that.”
