The world of One Piece is filled with many mysteries, but the magical Devil Fruits are some of the most iconic. These strange fruits grant anyone who eats them a unique superpower, but they lose their ability to swim forever.
Scattered across the seas, there are over 100 different kinds, and each one has a completely unique look. For a long time, the exact designs of many of these fruits were left to fan imagination, but creator Eiichiro Oda has started to reveal their official appearances, giving fans a clearer picture of these sought-after powers.
The Three Types of Devil Fruits
Devil Fruits are sorted into three main categories, each with a distinct kind of power. The most common type is Paramecia. These fruits give a huge range of superhuman abilities that don’t involve animals or natural elements. This can include things like making your body split apart, creating wax, or sprouting flowers on any surface.
The next type is Zoan. These fruits allow the user to transform into a specific animal, including a hybrid form. There are also special kinds of Zoans: Ancient Zoans for extinct animals like dinosaurs, and the very rare Mythical Zoans, which let users transform into legendary creatures like phoenixes or dragons.
The rarest and often most powerful type is Logia. These fruits grant the user the power to create, control, and become a natural element, such as smoke, sand, fire, or lightning. This makes Logia users incredibly difficult to defeat in battle.
A Complete List of Revealed Devil Fruit Designs
Here is a breakdown of the Devil Fruits whose official designs have been shown in the series or through official outside media like magazines, organized by their type.
Revealed Paramecia-Type Fruits
Paramecia fruits make up the largest and most diverse group. Their powers can alter the user’s body, let them generate a substance, or manipulate the environment in strange ways.
- Gomu Gomu no Mi: Eaten by Monkey D. Luffy. This fruit was originally introduced as a Paramecia that turns the user’s body into rubber. It looks like a purple, swirl-covered fruit similar to a cantaloupe. It was later revealed to be something much more special.
- Bara Bara no Mi: Eaten by Buggy the Clown. It gives him the power to split his body into pieces that he can control. He is immune to cutting attacks because of it.
- Hana Hana no Mi: Used by Nico Robin. This fruit allows her to sprout copies of any part of her body on any surface she can see.
- Ope Ope no Mi: Used by Trafalgar D. Water Law. It grants him the ability to create a spherical “ROOM” within which he can perform incredible surgical procedures, even swapping the souls of people.
- Gura Gura no Mi: Used first by Edward Newgate (Whitebeard) and later by Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard). This fruit has the power to create earthquakes and tsunamis. Its design was officially shown to look like a pear with blue swirls and cracks on the bottom, hinting at its destructive power.
Other revealed Paramecia fruits include the Bomu Bomu no Mi (Mr. 5), Doru Doru no Mi (Mr. 3), Mane Mane no Mi (Mr. 2 Bon Clay), Ito Ito no Mi (Donquixote Doflamingo), and the Mero Mero no Mi (Boa Hancock).
Revealed Zoan-Type Fruits
Zoan fruits are known for enhancing the user’s physical strength and giving them animalistic transformations.
- Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika: This is the true identity of Luffy’s fruit. Classified as a Mythical Zoan, it allows the user to transform into the legendary “Sun God” Nika, granting a rubbery body and immense freedom. The World Government had hidden its true name for centuries.
- Tori Tori no Mi, Model: Phoenix: Eaten by Marco. This Mythical Zoan lets him transform into a phoenix, surrounded by blue flames that can heal wounds. Its design was revealed to look like a pineapple, which fans found fitting as Marco’s hair resembles one.
- Uo Uo no Mi, Model: Seiryu: Eaten by Kaido. This is another Mythical Zoan that grants the power to transform into a massive, cloud-scaled dragon.
- Neko Neko no Mi, Model: Leopard: Used by Rob Lucci. This is a standard Zoan that allows transformation into a leopard and a powerful hybrid form.
- Hito Hito no Mi: Eaten by Tony Tony Chopper. This fruit turned the reindeer Chopper into a human-hybrid and gave him intelligence.
Other shown Zoans include the Ushi Ushi no Mi, Model: Giraffe (Kaku) and the Inu Inu no Mi, Model: Okuchi no Makami (Yamato).
Revealed Logia-Type Fruits
Logia fruits are incredibly powerful, and their designs often reflect their elemental nature.
- Mera Mera no Mi: This fruit allows the user to create, control, and become fire. It was first eaten by Portgas D. Ace and later by Sabo. The fruit itself is shaped and colored like a flickering flame.
- Goro Goro no Mi: Eaten by Enel. It grants control over lightning and even let Enel power an entire flying ship. The fruit’s design has not been shown in the manga or anime.
- Suna Suna no Mi: Used by Crocodile. This fruit gives the user the power to become, create, and control sand.
- Moku Moku no Mi: Eaten by Smoker. It allows him to transform his body into white smoke and control it.
- Yami Yami no Mi: Eaten by Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard). This is a unique and atypical Logia that creates and controls darkness, with the added ability to nullify other Devil Fruit powers.
The Mystery Behind Devil Fruit Origins
While the designs are becoming clearer, where these fruits come from is still one of the biggest secrets in One Piece. The world’s greatest scientist, Dr. Vegapunk, has a theory. He believes that Devil Fruits are a form of human evolution brought into the world by human desire. Essentially, the collective wishes of people thinking, “If only I could do this,” manifested into physical fruits.
According to Dr. Vegapunk’s research, Devil Fruits are a manifestation of various possibilities for human evolution, with all the different powers representing the many branches for humanity’s future, brought into existence by human hope and desire.
This unnatural origin is also why Devil Fruit users are “hated by the sea” and lose their ability to swim. The sea is seen as the mother of nature, and Devil Fruits are a rebellion against its natural order. This theory also suggests that the first Devil Fruits could have appeared during the mysterious Void Century around 800-900 years ago, with fruits like the Hito Hito no Mi, Model: Nika being among the oldest known.
As the story of One Piece continues into its Final Saga, fans can expect to see more official Devil Fruit designs revealed, getting one step closer to understanding the full truth behind these magical fruits.
