Amazon has removed an AI-generated recap video for Fallout Season 1 after viewers noticed it contained significant factual errors about the show’s plot. The recap was part of a new test feature on Prime Video but was taken down following criticism from fans who spotted mistakes about when the story takes place and how key events unfolded.

The streaming service had been testing these “Video Recaps” on a few of its popular shows in the United States. The tool used artificial intelligence to create short videos summarizing a season’s main story points to help viewers catch up before a new season. However, the AI-made recap for Fallout made at least two major mistakes that confused fans of the series.

What the AI Recap Got Wrong About Fallout

The errors in the recap video were first reported by fans on social media and websites like Reddit before being covered by news outlets. Two mistakes stood out as particularly confusing for anyone trying to remember the story.

First, the recap completely got the time period wrong for a major part of the show. The AI narration described flashback scenes featuring Walton Goggins’ character, Cooper Howard (who later becomes The Ghoul), as being set in “1950s America“. This is incorrect. While the Fallout world has a 1950s aesthetic, those specific flashback scenes are set in the year 2077โ€”the year the nuclear bombs fell in the series’ timeline. This mistake suggests the AI confused the show’s visual style with its actual historical setting.

The second error changed the meaning of a crucial character moment. The recap stated that The Ghoul gave the protagonist, Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell), a choice to “die or leave with him” on her quest to find her father. This framing makes it sound like The Ghoul threatened to kill Lucy if she refused. In the actual Season 1 finale, the situation was different. Lucy discovered her father was involved in her mother’s death, and The Ghoul offered her a partnership to find him in New Vegas. It was a mutual decision for them to travel together, not a lethal threat.

The monotone AI-narrator of the Fallout recap also wrongly said that The Ghoul gives Lucy MacLean a choice to ‘die or leave with him’ on a quest to find her father, though itโ€™s a bit more complex than that.

Amazon’s Response and Removal of the Feature

Following the reports of these mistakes, Amazon pulled the AI recap feature from Prime Video. The recaps are no longer available on the detail pages for the shows that were part of the test. This group included not just Fallout, but also The Rig, Tom Clancyโ€™s Jack Ryan, Upload, and Bosch.

Amazon has not made a public statement about why the recaps were removed or if they plan to fix and reintroduce them. The company originally described the “Video Recaps” tool in November as a “groundbreaking application of generative AI” meant to make catching up on shows easier and more enjoyable. The feature was in a testing phase and only available for select English-language Prime Original series in the U.S..

The timing of this error is awkward for Amazon, as Fallout Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on December 17. The recap was likely intended to build excitement and refresh memories for the new season’s launch.

This Is Not Amazon’s First AI Problem

The failed Fallout recap is part of a pattern for Amazon. Earlier in December, the company faced similar criticism and had to remove AI-generated English dubbing from several anime series on Prime Video, including Banana Fish, after fans complained about the poor quality.

These incidents show a recurring issue where Amazon’s use of AI for content creation leads to noticeable errors that frustrate viewers. In both cases, human professionalsโ€”writers for the recap, voice actors for the dubsโ€”were replaced by AI systems that produced subpar results.

Where to Find an Accurate Fallout Recap

For viewers looking to refresh their memory before Fallout Season 2 arrives on December 17, the flawed AI recap is no longer an option on Prime Video. Fans seeking a reliable summary have turned to other sources. Many entertainment news websites and fan communities have published their own, human-written recaps of Season 1’s events. These can be found through a simple web search and are likely to provide a factually correct overview of Lucy’s journey from Vault 33, her alliance with The Ghoul, and the mystery surrounding her father, Hank MacLean.
