Fallout Season 2 has arrived, picking up right where the explosive first season ended. The premiere episode, titled “The Innovator,” brings fans back into the fractured world of the wasteland and the mysterious vaults. The story follows our main characters on their separate, dangerous paths, all while introducing the iconic video game location of New Vegas into the live-action series. Here is a complete guide to every character and actor who brings this post-apocalyptic drama to life in the season’s first episode.
Returning Main Cast and Their New Journeys
The core group of actors from Season 1 returns to continue their complex stories, with their characters facing new threats and moral challenges.
Ella Purnell is back as the determined Lucy MacLean. After learning the dark truth about her father, Hank, Lucy’s mission has changed. She is no longer trying to rescue him but is now dedicated to bringing him to justice. In the premiere, she and The Ghoul, alongside their dog Dogmeat, are on the trail to New Vegas when they encounter a deadly group called the Great Khans.
Walton Goggins once again plays the dual role of the pre-war movie star Cooper Howard and his present-day, mutated counterpart, The Ghoul. In the post-apocalypse, The Ghoul continues his 200-year search for answers about his missing wife and daughter. The episode also features a flashback showing Cooper being recruited by scientist Lee Moldaver to spy on his wife, Barb, and her powerful employer, Vault-Tec.
While Aaron Moten‘s character, Maximus, does not appear in the first episode, his story is set to be a major part of the season. At the end of Season 1, he was wrongfully celebrated as a hero by the Brotherhood of Steel for the death of Lee Moldaver, a burden he must now carry.
Kyle MacLachlan returns as the enigmatic Hank MacLean. Having escaped in a suit of Brotherhood of Steel power armor, Hank finds refuge in an abandoned Vault-Tec laboratory in the premiere. There, he changes into a business suit and resumes his secretive work for the company, experimenting with a dangerous brain-computer interface.
Frances Turner has a larger role in Season 2 as Barb Howard, Cooper’s wife and a high-ranking Vault-Tec executive. Flashbacks reveal her central role in the company’s sinister plans. In one key scene, Cooper overhears a bugged conversation where Barb discusses Vault-Tec’s intention to start the nuclear apocalypse themselves.
Moisรฉs Arias reprises his role as Norm MacLean, Lucy’s brother. He remains trapped in Vault 31, where he is being taunted by the disembodied brain of Vault-Tec executive Bud Askins. Running out of supplies, Norm makes a bold threat to freeze all the cryogenically frozen Vault-Tec executives in the vault.
Key Supporting Characters and New Faces
Beyond the leads, several supporting characters from the vaults and the wasteland return, and one major new antagonist makes his debut.
Annabel O’Hagan returns as Steph Harper, who is now struggling with her new responsibilities as the Overseer of Vault 32. She continues to manage her complicated relationship with Chet, played by Dave Register, who helps care for her baby.
Justin Theroux joins the cast in the premiere as Robert House, the legendary CEO of RobCo Industries and the ruler of the New Vegas Strip. The episode opens with a pre-war scene where a man defends House from angry bar patrons. Executive producer Jonathan Nolan described House as a “measured, diabolical” technocrat who is “delicious fun” to bring to the screen.
Other returning fan favorites include:
- Leslie Uggams as Betty Pearson, the new Overseer of Vault 33.
- Xelia Mendes-Jones as Dane, a scribe for the Brotherhood of Steel.
- Matt Berry as the voice of the helpful Mr. Handy robots.
- Sarita Choudhury as the resistance leader Lee Moldaver, who appears in flashbacks.
Episode 1 Story Recap and Setting
“The Innovator” weaves together multiple storylines across different timelines and locations.
The main action in 2296 follows Lucy and The Ghoul as they travel toward New Vegas. Their journey is interrupted in the town of Novac, where they have a violent encounter with the Great Khans. Meanwhile, Hank begins his solitary work in the hidden Vault-Tec lab, and Norm plots his rebellion inside Vault 31.
Significant flashbacks to 2077, just before the bombs fell, show the early days of the conspiracy. We see Cooper Howard’s growing suspicion of Vault-Tec and the moment Lee Moldaver convinces him to secretly gather information on his wife, Barb, and her meeting with Robert House in Las Vegas.
The episode confirms that the major new setting for Season 2 is the Mojave Wasteland and the city of New Vegas, a beloved location from the Fallout: New Vegas game.
