The hit Prime Video series Fallout has already locked in a third season, and fans are buzzing about how the show will use major details from the video games. The season 2 finale gave viewers a clear look at where the story is heading, and it turns out the creative team is pulling from some deep cuts in the game series. With the show officially renewed, the wait is on to see how Lucy, The Ghoul, and Maximus navigate the expanding wasteland.
Season 3 Confirmed Before Season 2 Premiered
Fallout got the green light for a third season back in May 2025, months before the second season aired. Amazon MGM Studios made the announcement early, showing strong confidence in the show. Vernon Sanders, Global Head of Television at Amazon MGM Studios, said the team was happy to keep the series going alongside their partners at Bethesda.
Executive producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy shared their excitement about continuing the story. The early renewal gave the writing team time to map out the next chapter while season 2 was still being edited.
“The holidays came a little early this year. We are thrilled to be ending the world all over again for a third season of Fallout.” – Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, executive producers
What the Season 2 Finale Sets Up
The season 2 finale ended with several big storylines that will carry into the next season. The Ghoul, played by Walton Goggins, found out his family is not in New Vegas. Instead, he discovered a postcard from Colorado with a note that his wife left for him. He now heads east to the Rocky Mountains to search for his wife Barb and daughter Janey.
Lucy, played by Ella Purnell, dealt a major blow to her father Hank by using his own mind-control device against him. But Hank revealed he already sent out an army of people with brain implants programmed to follow orders set centuries ago. Lucy reunited with Maximus (Aaron Moten) just as the Legion started marching toward New Vegas.
Back in the vault, Steph triggered something called “Phase 2” after vault dwellers discovered her secret past. The show has not yet explained what Phase 2 means, but it connects to larger plans from Vault-Tec and the mysterious Enclave organization.
Colorado Territory Brings New Game Elements
Fallout showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet explained that season 3 will take viewers to Colorado, a location that has not appeared in the main games. This gives the writers freedom to create new stories while still pulling from game lore.
She noted that part of the fun with any Fallout game is discovering where the story takes place. The show wants to give fans that same feeling by visiting new areas of the wasteland. Colorado could also feature factions from the games that have moved there over time.
“We all feel like the joy of a Fallout game is the question of ‘Well, where is it going to be set?’ Because that is going to infuse the entire flavor and experience.” – Geneva Robertson-Dworet, showrunner
The creative team mentioned that The Ghoul will likely get sidetracked on his way to Colorado. This fits the style of the games, where players often wander off the main path and discover unexpected things.
Liberty Prime and Big Game References
The season 2 finale teased Liberty Prime, a giant robot from Fallout 3. In the games, this massive war machine speaks anti-communist propaganda and serves as a powerful weapon. The show’s version of Liberty Prime could appear in season 3, bringing one of the most memorable elements from Fallout 3 to the screen.
The writers also hinted at pulling from Van Buren, the code name for the original Fallout 3 that Black Isle Studios worked on before Bethesda took over. That canceled project would have taken place in Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado. The show might make some of those ideas official parts of Fallout history.
Release Timeline and Production Plans
Jonathan Nolan told IGN in December 2025 that the team hopes to start filming season 3 in summer 2026. He mentioned that shows often take longer between seasons, but the Fallout team wants to get back on the air as quickly as possible without losing the show’s quality.
The Film & Television Industry Alliance listed that season 3 will begin production on May 1, 2026, in California. If filming follows a similar schedule to previous seasons, fans could expect the new episodes sometime in early 2027.
Season 1 arrived in April 2024, and season 2 came in December 2025. That gap was about 20 months. A similar timeline would put season 3 around late 2026 or early 2027.
Cast Members Expected to Return
The main cast is expected to return for season 3. This includes Ella Purnell as Lucy, Walton Goggins as The Ghoul, and Aaron Moten as Maximus. Kyle MacLachlan might appear again as Hank, though his character erased his own memories in the finale.
Moisés Arias as Norm, Frances Turner as Barb, and Macaulay Culkin as Legate are also likely to return. Justin Theroux joined the cast in season 2 as Robert House, and his character’s digital avatar is now active in New Vegas.
Ella Purnell shared that she played Fallout 4 before season 1 but avoided playing New Vegas before season 2. For season 3, she might play multiple games to prepare for what comes next.
Where to Watch the Show
Both season 1 and season 2 of Fallout are available to stream on Prime Video. The show follows a weekly release schedule for new episodes, and Todd Howard from Bethesda confirmed that season 3 will keep the same format.
