Fans of the hit Prime Video series Fallout have a lot to look forward to. While the show’s second season is set to premiere on December 17, 2025, news about Season 3 is already breaking. The show’s creators are working to bring the wasteland back to screens faster than ever, sharing new details about their future plans and the difficult real-world challenges faced during production.
Fallout Creators Aim for Summer 2026 Filming Start for Season 3
Jonathan Nolan, the show’s executive producer, recently provided a clear update on the next chapter. He stated the team is “hoping to be shooting again next summer”. This target, around mid-2026, is a hopeful sign for fans eager to avoid long waits between seasons.
Nolan explained the team’s philosophy clearly: “What’s happened in television, in terms of taking longer from season to season, is kind of an unfortunate trend. So you do not want the show to lose any of its scope, but we know we like to be back on the air as soon as we can”.
This forward momentum is built on a strong foundation. Fallout Season 1 was a major success, drawing over 100 million viewers and earning an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Drama Series. Amazon officially renewed the series for a third season in May 2025, well before the second season’s debut. This early commitment gives the creative team a head start on their ambitious schedule.
“With regard to production, we are hoping to be shooting again next summer,” Jonathan Nolan revealed to IGN. “We will see if that all comes together. Best laid plans and all. But we are excited that the scope of the show feels undiminished season to season”.
A Look at What’s Coming: Season 2 Details and New Vegas
While Season 3 is on the horizon, the immediate focus is the eight-episode Season 2, which arrives on Prime Video on December 17, 2025. The story continues the journey of Lucy MacLean (Ella Purnell), the Ghoul (Walton Goggins), and Maximus (Aaron Moten) as they travel to the ruins of New Vegas, a beloved location from the games.
A new clip shown at Brazil’s CCXP convention gave fans a taste of what’s to come. It features Lucy and the Ghoul at a famous landmark from Fallout: New Vegas: Dinky the T-Rex. In the scene, the Ghoul finds himself in a dangerous spot, needing Lucy’s help to get out of trouble. The season will also introduce new characters, including Justin Theroux as the mysterious ruler of New Vegas, Mr. House.
A major highlight of the new season will be the arrival of the Deathclaw, a terrifying monster from the games. The production team chose to build a large, practical puppet for the creature, requiring four puppeteers to operate, rather than relying only on computer effects.
Co-showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet explained this choice: “We do things practically whenever possible. We want things to be tactile and tangible. It was only by using puppets, that are quite scary when you see them in person, that things feel deeply real”.
The Real-World Challenges Behind the Scenes in California
Filming Fallout Season 2 moved from the East Coast to California, aided by a state tax credit. However, production faced a severe real-life crisis when catastrophic wildfires hit Southern California in early 2025.
Tragically, 10 crew members lost their homes in the fires, and many more were displaced. The production shut down for a week or two to allow the team to manage the situation. The cast and producers have spoken about how the crew supported each other during this incredibly difficult time.
Actor Aaron Moten called it “a really rough year in California,” while Walton Goggins expressed gratitude that the production could provide work for so many local crew members. Jonathan Nolan connected this tragedy to a larger issue in the film industry, noting how much production has left California over the years.
“Hopefully now with a revised and revamped tax credit program, we’re gonna be competitive again and we’re gonna see more and more production coming back to LA,” Nolan told Deadline, expressing hope for the industry’s future in the state.
What the Season 3 Timeline Could Look Like
Based on the producers’ comments and the previous season’s schedule, a potential timeline for Fallout Season 3 is taking shape. If filming begins in the summer of 2026 as planned, a premiere could be possible by spring or summer of 2027.
This would represent a faster turnaround compared to many other major series. The show’s team has emphasized that maintaining this pace without reducing the show’s quality or large-scale feel is a key goal.
