Seeing the actor transition from that childhood role to a violent slaver just days later creates a powerful and disturbing effect. Robertson-Dworet directly addressed this intentional clash of images in an interview with People magazine.
“Of course, I was someone who grew up going to the theater many times to see Home Alone as a kid. That innocent boy now running a slave society just felt really fun to us. It was very delicious.”
This “delicious” contrast is central to the show’s ethos, where expectations are constantly subverted. The casting plays on the audience’s built-in nostalgia, only to shatter it with the harsh reality of the Wasteland.
Understanding Culkin’s Character: The Lacerta Legate
Macaulay Culkin plays an original character created for the TV series, not one from the Fallout video games. The Lacerta Legate is a high-ranking general, or Legate, within one of two factions of Caesar’s Legion now fighting a civil war for control.
“Lacerta” is Latin for lizard. In his debut episode, he demonstrates his ruthlessness by immediately executing a recaptured slave and calmly sentencing protagonist Lucy MacLean to crucifixion after she offers to help mediate the Legion’s internal conflict.
“All that remains of America is the overwhelming evidence of its failure,” the Legate tells Lucy, summarizing his faction’s philosophy.
He explains that the original Caesar died, leaving a written successor’s name hidden in his pocket. The two Legion factions are locked in a stalemate, each trying to retrieve the note while calling the other a “false Caesar”. Despite the playful meta-commentary of his casting, the production team emphasizes that Culkin approached the role with deep thought and commitment. Geneva Robertson-Dworet praised his collaborative spirit and specific vision for the character.
“We were so honored to have him… He had this very particular read on the kind of character that he wanted to play within the Legion and I think he really brought that to the screen,” Robertson-Dworet said.
Culkin’s performance was informed by his existing knowledge of the Fallout universe. He reportedly watched lore videos on YouTube and was familiar enough with the games to ask the showrunners if they wanted the hard “K” pronunciation of “Caesar” (Kai-sar), which is used by the Legion. This question immediately signaled his understanding of the source material.
