Ella Purnell, who plays the optimistic Lucy MacLean, has revealed her absolute favorite moment from filming the new season of Fallout. It involves a drug trip, a complete personality flip, and a lot of surprised reactions. In the second season of the hit Prime Video show, Lucy continues her dangerous journey across the wasteland. Her character, known for her strong morals and resistance to violence, goes through a startling change in Season 2, Episode 4, titled “The Demon in the Snow”. Purnell says getting to play this unexpected version of Lucy was the highlight of her filming experience.
Ella Purnell Explains Why the Chem-Addicted Scene Was So Fun to Film
In a recent interview, Ella Purnell shared why a specific chaotic sequence in Episode 4 stood out above everything else. After a near-death experience, Lucy is given a life-saving dose of a powerful steroid called Buffout. The drug alters her mind, lowering her inhibitions and completely changing her attitude toward violence. The normally peaceful Lucy goes on what Purnell describes as a “drug-induced killing spree” in the area of Freeside.
Purnell loved filming this part because it was so different from anything Lucy would normally do. “Probably my favorite part of filming this entire season was getting to do that because, again, it’s like something you’d never in a million years think Lucy would do,” the actress said. She focused on the moment Lucy realizes she is not acting like herself and when her traveling partner, The Ghoul, explains that the drugs are causing her altered state. Purnell found the writing perfect, showing Lucy trying to justify her actions “fully in the way an addict would”.
“I couldn’t believe it. I felt so scandalous. Coming from any other character, you’d be like, ‘Yeah, it’s just Fallout,’ but just something about it being Lucy, it feels scandalous,” Purnell told Deadline.
She described the experience as “very fun to play a side of Lucy that is fearless for once”. For an actor, getting to explore a version of her character with no fear or moral stakes for a short time was a thrilling and new challenge.
How the Scene Changes Lucy MacLean’s Character in Fallout
This key scene is more than just a wild moment; it has a deep effect on Lucy’s story. The show uses this drug trip to explore how extreme environments can break down a person’s identity. Lucy entered the wasteland with a firm set of Vault-Tec ideals, but survival has forced her to compromise repeatedly. The chem addiction pushes her further, forcing her to confront actions she would normally find unthinkable.
The event also impacts her complicated relationship with The Ghoul, played by Walton Goggins. Their dynamic is a core part of Season 2, and Lucy’s unpredictable behavior during this crisis brings their tensions to a new level. The scene does not celebrate her loss of control. Instead, it shows the psychological cost of adapting to a brutal world. It asks the audience to consider how much a person can change before they lose themselves completely.
