The popular Far Cry video game franchise is getting the television treatment. FX has officially ordered a new series based on Ubisoft’s hit first-person shooter games, bringing the chaotic open-world action to the small screen. The project brings together two major creative forces: Noah Hawley, the mind behind Fargo and Alien: Earth, and Rob Mac, creator and star of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Mac is confirmed to star in the series, which will stream on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ internationally.
The Creative Team Behind the Series
The Far Cry series unites two well-established FX producers for the first time. Noah Hawley brings his experience with anthology storytelling from the critically acclaimed Fargo series, while Rob Mac adds his comedic background and producing experience from It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and Welcome to Wrexham. This marks Mac’s return to working with Ubisoft, having previously collaborated with the company on the Apple TV series Mythic Quest.
Nick Grad, President of FX Entertainment, expressed confidence in the pairing, stating that the network has had “magnificent partnerships with Rob Mac and Noah Hawley for a combined six series and 32 seasons of television.”
“Getting to work alongside Noah Hawley is a dream realized,” said Mac. “Ubisoft has been remarkably generous, entrusting us with one of the most iconic video-game worlds ever created.”
The series will be executive produced by Mac through his More Better Productions banner and Hawley through his 26 Keys production company as part of his overall deal with FX and Disney Entertainment Television.
Anthology Format and Story Details
The television adaptation will follow the same anthology structure that made the video game series successful. Each season will feature a completely new setting and new cast of characters, maintaining the standalone storytelling approach of the games. This format allows the show to explore different locations and narratives while retaining the core themes and elements that define the Far Cry experience.
“What I love about the Far Cry game franchise is it’s an anthology. Each game is a variation of a theme, the same way each season of Fargo is a variation on a theme,” said Hawley. “To create a big action show that can change from year to year, while always exploring the nature of humanity through this complex and chaotic lens is a dream come true.”
While specific plot details for the first season remain under wraps, the games have provided diverse settings that could inspire future seasonsโfrom tropical islands and the African plains to the Himalayas and rural Montana. The series is expected to maintain the games’ focus on action and memorable antagonists while exploring moral ambiguity in lawless environments.
About the Far Cry Game Franchise
Since the first game launched in 2004, the Far Cry franchise has become one of Ubisoft’s most valuable properties, accumulating more than 100 million unique players worldwide. The games are known for their first-person shooter gameplay set in expansive open worlds where players must survive against both human enemies and wild animals.
The franchise is particularly celebrated for its compelling villains, including Vaas Montenegro from Far Cry 3, Pagan Min from Far Cry 4, and Joseph Seed from Far Cry 5. The most recent main game, Far Cry 6, was released in 2021 and featured Giancarlo Esposito as its primary antagonist.
This isn’t the first time the Far Cry universe has been adapted for screen. A direct-to-video film directed by Uwe Boll was released in 2008, and Netflix produced an animated series called Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix in 2023, inspired by Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.
Production and Development
The Far Cry TV series will be produced by FX Productions. Executive producers include Rob Mac, Noah Hawley, Emilia Serrano for 26 Keys, Nick Frenkel for 3 Arts, Jackie Cohn for More Better Productions, John Campisi, and Gerard Guillemot, Margaret Boykin and Austin Dill for Ubisoft Film & Television.
The series order continues FX’s strategy of developing video game adaptations, joining other major projects in the growing trend of bringing interactive entertainment to television and streaming platforms. With the combination of Hawley’s dramatic anthology experience and Mac’s comedic background, the series aims to bring a fresh perspective to the action-packed world of Far Cry while staying true to the spirit of the games that fans have enjoyed for nearly two decades.
