The first season of FX’s Love Story came to a close on Thursday, March 26, and as history predicted, the ending brought viewers to the heartbreaking moment of the 1999 plane crash that took the lives of John F. Kennedy Jr. , Carolyn Bessette, and her sister Lauren Bessette.
For nine episodes, the series, created by Ryan Murphy, followed the whirlwind romance between the son of a president and the fashion publicist who captured his heart. The finale did not shy away from the inevitable tragedy, but instead of focusing solely on the crash, it spent its final moments exploring the grief left behind and the fragile hope that defined their last days together.
A Relationship Tested Before the Final Flight
The finale, titled “The Final Weekend,” picked up after the couple’s explosive fight. John (Paul Anthony Kelly) and Carolyn (Sarah Pidgeon) were seen in couples therapy, trying to salvage their marriage from the pressures of non-stop media attention and the weight of the Kennedy legacy. The therapist suggested a trial separation—an idea both of them immediately rejected.
While the tension was high, the episode showed the deep connection that kept them together. They shared quiet moments at a dive bar and reconnected physically, trying to find their way back to the version of themselves that fell in love years earlier. Carolyn told John she wanted to “try,” and they agreed to attend his cousin Rory’s wedding together in Martha’s Vineyard.
Carolyn’s sister Lauren (Sydney Lemmon) joined them for the trip. The decision to fly instead of taking a ferry, a choice John made to avoid the paparazzi, set the stage for the final act.
How the Show Depicted the Plane Crash
The series took a restrained approach to the actual accident. Viewers saw John at the controls of the Piper Saratoga as they approached Martha’s Vineyard. Conditions became difficult, and the cockpit alarms began to sound. Carolyn, who had asked permission to sit with him, remained calm, telling him, “It’s OK, just breathe.”
Rather than showing the crash, the screen cut to black. The audience was left with the sound of alarms and the silence that followed.
The creative choice shifted the focus away from the spectacle of the disaster and onto the emotional aftermath for the families who were left to pick up the pieces.
Aftermath: The Grief of the Kennedy and Bessette Families
The second half of the finale dealt with the hours and days after the plane went missing. Caroline Kennedy (Grace Gummer) received the news from the Coast Guard. The show depicted her immediate collapse into grief, crying out, “I’m not doing this again,” referencing the assassinations of her father and uncle that shaped her childhood.
Tensions arose between the Kennedy family and Ann Freeman (Constance Zimmer), Carolyn and Lauren’s mother. Ann expressed her frustration that Carolyn was often blamed in the media for distracting John, while Lauren was “practically a footnote” in the tragedy. The two women eventually found common ground, grieving together in the couple’s Tribeca loft.
Ann read a eulogy at a service for the three of them, and the families agreed to bury the ashes at sea.

The Final Scene: A Look at What Could Have Been
The last shot of the season showed John and Carolyn sitting on a beach, watching the waves and holding each other. It was a quiet, private moment—the kind of peace they rarely had in life. The scene served as a memory or a vision of the life they might have shared if not for that July night in 1999.
Executive producer Brad Simpson explained that the goal was to honor the people behind the headlines.
“We loved these characters. We fell in love with them, and it is essential that the audience loved them too. We knew from the beginning that we were coming in with love and respect for these characters and that we wanted the audience to share that with us.”
