During a recent interview, Gabriel Basso, the star of Netflix’s hit thriller The Night Agent, nearly let a major secret slip. While speaking with Variety at the Venice International Film Festival, Basso was about to announce the release date for the show’s highly anticipated third season before his publicist quickly intervened to stop him. The show’s third season finished filming in July 2025 and is now in post-production, with an expected premiere in early 2026.

The Almost-Reveal at Venice Film Festival

The incident occurred at the A House of Dynamite premiere during the Venice International Film Festival. In a conversation with Variety, Basso confirmed that a release date for the new season had already been set. When the interviewer asked what that date was, the actor began to answer before his publicist stepped in.

The interviewer jokingly responded, “Why are you doing your job so well?” This light-hearted moment confirms that the release information is being closely guarded, even from the show’s own star. While fans didn’t get the exact date, the exchange confirms that the timeline for the new season is officially locked in by Netflix.

When to Expect Season 3

Although the exact date remains under wraps, production updates provide a strong clue. Showrunner Shawn Ryan announced on social media on July 14, 2025, that filming for the new season had officially been completed.

“New York, Washington, D.C., Turkey, Mexico, Dominican Republicโ€ฆ We hit them all. Season 3 of #TheNightAgent has officially wrapped production.”

With principal photography finished, the series has moved into post-production. Multiple entertainment sources report that Netflix is aiming for an early 2026 release. Some industry reports suggest a potential premiere in January 2026, which would mirror the release pattern of Season 2, which launched in January 2025.

What’s Next for Peter Sutherland?

While specific plot details for Season 3 are scarce, the season two finale set up a new, dangerous path for FBI agent Peter Sutherland. After the events of the second season, Peter is essentially working as a double agent. He is tasked with infiltrating the orbit of intelligence broker Jacob Monroe, who is closely aligned with the likely next President of the United States, Governor Richard Hagan.

His orders from his handler, Catherine Weaver, are clear: “Gain his trust. Uncover every snake on his payroll and then expose. Destroy.” This new mission will take Peter across the globe, with filming confirmed in locations including Istanbul, Mexico City, and the Dominican Republic.

New Faces and Returning Characters

Gabriel Basso will, of course, return as the lead, Peter Sutherland. They will be joined by several cast members promoted to series regulars, including Fola Evans-Akingbola as Secret Service agent Chelsea Arrington, Ward Horton as Governor Hagan, and Albert Jones as FBI deputy director Aiden Mosley.

The new season will also introduce several major new characters played by well-known actors. Jennifer Morrison will play the First Lady, described as a savvy political operator and philanthropist. Stephen Moyer will appear as a top hitman, and David Lyons will play a former spy lured out of retirement. Genesis Rodriguez joins the cast as a financial reporter chasing an explosive story.

A Missing Favorite Character

One character who will not be returning for the third season is Rose Larkin, played by Luciane Buchanan. The actor confirmed in an interview with Deadline that the writers decided to follow Peter’s journey separately after the characters’ breakup at the end of season two.

Buchanan stated that she respected the decision, saying, “If it makes sense to a story, I’ll do that. If it doesnโ€™t, let’s not force that.” Showrunner Shawn Ryan echoed this, noting that while Rose is not in the current season, he doesn’t believe the show is done with her story and hopes circumstances could allow for her return in the future.

Behind the Scenes and What to Expect

Shawn Ryan continues as the creator, showrunner, and executive producer. He has promised that the new season will deliver “bigger and even better” adventures, spanning the globe with new thrills, stunts, and characters. Basso has teased that the action in the upcoming season is “insane,” involving some of the biggest stunts they have ever filmed.

The first season of The Night Agent was a massive success for Netflix, becoming the third-most-viewed debuting series on the platform shortly after its release in 2023 and holding a spot among Netflix’s most-watched English-language series of all time. The early renewal for a third season before the second one even premiered highlights the show’s continued importance to Netflix’s lineup.
