Gege Akutami, the creator of the popular manga series Jujutsu Kaisen, has announced a new spin-off titled Mojuro. This new manga will be set in the same universe as Jujutsu Kaisen but will focus on a new generation of characters. The series is set to debut in Weekly Shonen Jump on September 7, 2025. Akutami is writing the story, while Yuji Iwasaki, known for illustrating Cipher Academy, is handling the artwork. The spin-off will be a short-term serialization, planned to run for about six months and collected into three volumes.

The story of Mojuro is set in the year 2080, decades after the events of the original Jujutsu Kaisen series. It will follow the grandchildren of two beloved characters, Yuta Okkotsu and Maki Zenin. Their grandchildren, named Yuuka Okkotsu and Tsurugi Okkotsu, will be the main protagonists. This confirms that Yuta and Maki ended up together, a relationship that fans had speculated about for a long time. The spin-off will explore how the jujutsu world has evolved and what new threats and challenges arise in this future setting.

Akutami shared his thoughts on the new project, explaining that he had received several offers for spin-offs during the original series but declined them to maintain creative control. However, the concept of Mojuro appealed to him because it allowed for expansion of the jujutsu world in a parallel storyline. He stated:

“Hello, itโ€™s Akutami. Itโ€™s been a while. While serializing Jujutsu Kaisen, I received several offers for spinoffs written by others. However, because manga is a medium where things can easily get out of my control, I was afraid of the title spreading in ways I couldnโ€™t manage, so at the time, I couldnโ€™t accept those offers. But when this particular offer came, and I thought about how it might expand the main story, delve deeper into its setting, or even shift eras entirely, I realized that if it were set in a parallel line, it could open the door to many different projects. This became the spark that gave rise to โ€˜Mojuro.โ€™”

The first chapter of Mojuro will be 54 pages long, which is much longer than a typical manga chapter. It will include a color opening page and will be featured on the cover of Weekly Shonen Jump for its launch. The series will explore new cursed techniques, political tensions, and the legacy of past characters while introducing fresh faces to the narrative.

Background and Setting of Mojuro

Mojuro is set 60 years after the events of Jujutsu Kaisen, specifically after the Shinjuku Showdown arc. The world has changed significantly, with advancements in technology and shifts in the jujutsu society. The story begins with Yuuka and Tsurugi Okkotsu, the grandchildren of Yuta and Maki, who have inherited their grandparents’ abilities and responsibilities. Yuta and Maki are confirmed to have passed away due to old age, with Maki dying earlier than Yuta. This leaves their grandchildren to navigate a world where cursed energy remains a critical aspect of life.

The spin-off will address unresolved plot points from the original series, such as the American interest in cursed energy. In Jujutsu Kaisen, it was revealed that Kenjaku had disclosed the existence of cursed energy to the United States, leading to geopolitical tensions. In Mojuro, this plot point is expanded, with America and other countries showing continued interest in Japan’s cursed energy resources. The story will also introduce alien characters, adding a new layer to the universe. One of the aliens, named Maru, arrives on Earth and interacts with the new generation of sorcerers.

Characters and Story Details

Yuuka Okkotsu is described as a mischievous but determined young sorcerer. She receives a ring from her grandfather Yuta, which is believed to be connected to the shikigami Rika. This ring becomes a point of conflict within the Gojo clan, as it is considered a forbidden cursed object. Yuuka’s brother, Tsurugi, is tasked with keeping the ring, but Yuuka refuses to hand it over, vowing to prove her strength and worth.

The series will also feature other new characters, including an investigator named Maru, who is an extraterrestrial being with three eyes. Maru’s species, called Simuria, arrives on Earth as refugees and requests protection. Their abilities are similar to those of jujutsu sorcerers, which leads to diplomatic interactions and conflicts. Maru’s presence hints at a broader universe where cursed energy is not limited to Earth.

The storyline will involve human trafficking related to cursed energy, with Japanese citizens being targeted for their unique abilities. This plot point reflects real-world issues while staying true to the dark fantasy themes of Jujutsu Kaisen. The national police are unable to handle these crimes, prompting jujutsu sorcerers to step in.

Creative Team and Development

Gege Akutami is writing the story for Mojuro, while Yuji Iwasaki is responsible for the illustrations. Iwasaki is known for his work on Cipher Academy, a manga series focused on puzzles and ciphers. Akutami praised Iwasaki’s talent, stating:

“The artist is the incredibly talented Yuji Iwasaki-sensei. Heโ€™s amazing!! His drawings are superb!! Truly!! Iโ€™d be very happy if you enjoy Mojuro as a new entry point into the world of jujutsu.”

Akutami also mentioned that his health had declined towards the end of Jujutsu Kaisen’s serialization, but he is now ready to return with this new project. The spin-off will allow him to explore the jujutsu world in ways he hadn’t considered before, including shifting eras and introducing new concepts.

Fan Reactions and Expectations

Fans of Jujutsu Kaisen have expressed excitement about Mojuro, especially since it confirms the romantic relationship between Yuta and Maki. Many had hoped for a sequel or spin-off that would address the loose ends of the original series, such as the fate of Yuji, Megumi, and Nobara. While Mojuro may not answer all these questions, it provides a new perspective on the universe.

The spin-off has also generated discussion about the ending of Jujutsu Kaisen, which some fans found rushed. The original series ended in late 2024 after a lengthy battle against Sukuna, leaving little room for wrapping up all storylines. Mojuro offers an opportunity to expand the lore and delve deeper into the world-building that Akutami had initially avoided.

Future of the Jujutsu Kaisen Universe

The announcement of Mojuro suggests that Akutami is open to further expanding the jujutsu world. He mentioned that this spin-off could “open the door to many different projects,” including potential stories set in other eras or focusing on other characters. This could mean more spin-offs, prequels, or sequels in the future.

In addition to the manga, the Jujutsu Kaisen anime is set to continue with Season 3 in January 2026. The new season will adapt the Culling Game arc, which is one of the most intense storylines in the series. A special movie event titled Jujutsu Kaisen: Execution will premiere in theaters on December 5, 2025, featuring a recap of the Shibuya Incident arc and the first two episodes of the Culling Game arc.

Mojuro represents a new chapter in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe, offering fans a chance to revisit the world they love while exploring fresh narratives. With its focus on next-generation characters, geopolitical tensions, and even extraterrestrial elements, the spin-off promises to be a unique addition to the franchise. As the release date approaches, fans eagerly await to see how Akutami and Iwasaki will bring this new story to life.
