Gen V Season 2: Cipher’s Mystery and Marie’s New Power Change Everything in ‘The Boys’ Universe

Gen V Season 2

)

The new season of Gen V is tightly connecting its college drama to the larger chaos of The Boys, and a mysterious new dean named Cipher is at the center of it all. The story reveals that Cipher, who is training students to be more powerful, has a deep history with the show’s main hero, Marie Moreau, and is secretly working with Sister Sage from The Boys, setting the stage for a major conflict.

Who Is Dean Cipher?

The new dean of Godolkin University, Cipher, is a complex and powerful figure. On the surface, he appears to be a normal human, but he demonstrates formidable control and abilities that rival a supe. He is strong, cold, and manipulative, running the university with an iron fist.

A major mystery surrounds his true nature. Marie Moreau discovers that Cipher has no Compound V in his bloodstream, meaning he is not a supe in the traditional sense. Despite this, he possesses clear superhuman abilities. He can take control of other people’s bodies, as he does with Jordan Li, forcing them to fight against their will. He also seems to feel little to no pain, stabbing his own hand without reaction. Furthermore, the mind-controlling supe Cate Dunlap cannot read his mind, suggesting his powers operate on a completely different level.

Cipher’s past is deeply intertwined with the university’s dark history. He was revealed to be the doctor at the Godolkin fertility clinic who delivered Marie, connecting him directly to the secret program known as Project Odessa.

The Shocking Cameo That Ties Everything Together

A major cameo in Episode 5 solidifies the connection between Gen V and The Boys. Sister Sage, the super-intelligent supe from the main series, appears and is revealed to be in a secret relationship with Cipher. The two are shown plotting together, with a common goal that involves Marie Moreau.

In a significant power shift, it is confirmed that Sister Sage has replaced the disgraced Ashley Barrett as the new CEO of Vought International. This promotion places one of the most intelligent characters in the universe at the helm of the powerful corporation, drastically changing the landscape for the upcoming The Boys Season 5.

Their alliance reveals a larger conspiracy. Sage and Cipher are working to push Marie to her limits, believing she could be the key to challenging Homelander’s dominance. However, their partnership also suggests they are maneuvering against Homelander themselves, recognizing his instability as a threat to their own plans.

Marie Moreau’s True Power Is Finally Unleashed

Dean Cipher has taken a very specific interest in Marie, acting as a dark mentor focused on helping her unlock new levels of her power. He criticizes her reliance on cutting herself to use her blood-based abilities and trains her to control blood without self-harm, such as moving sealed bags of blood with her mind.

Cipher believes Marie has the potential to become more powerful than Homelander. This belief is proven correct in a devastating moment. As part of a test orchestrated by Cipher and Sage, Marie’s long-lost sister, Annabeth, is held captive in the Elmira facility. Marie finds her sister with her throat slit. Overwhelmed by grief and rage, Marie’s powers evolve beyond creating weaponsโ€”she miraculously heals the fatal wound and brings her sister back to life.

This act of resurrection reveals that Marie’s hemokinesis is far more profound than anyone knew. Her true power is not just weaponizing blood, but manipulating it to control life and death itself. This ability could fundamentally change the balance of power in The Boys universe.

The Mystery of the Burned Man in the Chamber

A deeply unsettling subplot involves a severely burned man Cipher keeps alive in a hyperbaric chamber in his home. Cipher refers to this man as his father and is shown caring for him, though their relationship appears complex and dark.

This has led to a popular fan theory that the burned man is actually Thomas Godolkin, the original founder of Godolkin University who was believed to have died in a lab fire shown in the season’s opening sequence. The theory suggests that the real Cipher (or Godolkin) is using his power to control other bodies because his own was destroyed. This would explain why the body Marie examines has no Compound Vโ€”the person she’s looking at is just a puppet, while the real supe is the man in the chamber.

This theory is strengthened by the show’s many parallels to the X-Men, where Godolkin serves as a dark version of Professor X, who is also a powerful telepath.

How the Show Honors a Lost Star

The storyline for Gen V Season 2 was significantly reworked following the tragic death of actor Chance Perdomo in March 2024. The producers decided not to recast his role, and the character of Andre Anderson is written out of the show, having died during the group’s escape attempt at the end of Season 1.

The show’s co-showrunner, Michele Fazekas, stated:

โ€œWe knew from the beginning that we wanted to honor Chance and honor Andre. By the time we got to the end of the season, we looked back and weโ€™re like, This whole seasonโ€™s about him.โ€

Andre’s death serves as a major emotional driver for the other characters, particularly Marie and his father, Polarity, who returns to Godolkin to investigate what happened to his son.
