Former Big Brother contestant George Gilbert has shared his side of the story in a detailed new video, explaining the comments that led to his removal from the show and describing the emotional aftermath. The 23-year-old parish councillor was removed from the ITV reality show for what producers called “repeated use of unacceptable language and behaviour.”

The Final Conversation

Gilbert explained that his removal stemmed from a late-night conversation with other housemates about conspiracy theories. He stated that he was asking questions about why antisemitism has persisted throughout history when he made the comments that led to his removal.

He recounted his exact words from the conversation: “I think it’s terrible that antisemitism is on the rise in London, we need to stamp it out, and my heart goes out to all the Jews who are innocently discriminated against.” However, he then added a line that would ultimately cause his removal: “I do understand why people are sceptical about some Jewish conspiracy [theories], because some of the finest minds in human history, the most intellectual men of all time, have had antisemitic trope in their writing. So, is it a case of no smoke without fire?”

Gilbert defended his comments by saying he was simply trying to understand the root causes of discrimination. “I’m just asking a question because I wanted to know why antisemitism has lasted for centuries,” he said. “Then I can fight the right battle.” He acknowledged that asking “is it a case of no smoke without fire?” could be “provocative unnecessarily.”

Multiple Unaired Warnings

The reality star revealed he received four formal warnings during his time in the house, only one of which was broadcast to viewers. His first warning came on his initial night in the house after a discussion where he claimed Adolf Hitler was “misguided” and “did the things he did because he would’ve been fed a pack of lies about Jewish people.” Producers interpreted this as “justification for the Holocaust.”

On his third day, Gilbert received another warning for comments about relationships and race. He told housemates he would be “betraying my kind” as a redhead if he were to have a baby with anyone who was not white. He elaborated: “If I had a baby with a black woman or a brown woman, the child would have brown skin, brown eyes, brown hairโ€ฆ and the gingerness would die a death.” He explained that as someone with rare ginger hair and blue eyes, he wanted to “procreate with somebody who’s similar looking to me” to preserve his traits.

The only warning that aired occurred during a game of Truth or Dare, where Gilbert mocked fellow housemate Sam by using exaggerated limp wrists and mimicking Sam’s voice. Big Brother formally warned him that this behavior could be “offensive to Sam, your housemates and the viewing public.”

The Removal Process

Gilbert described the moment he was removed from the house as devastating. He was called to the diary room first thing in the morning, where Big Brother informed him he was being removed for breaking rules regarding “unacceptable and offensive language” despite prior warnings.

“Understood,” Gilbert responded in the diary room. When asked if he had anything to say, he stated: “I always want to question any theory, any movement, I just like to, I just want to know the truth about things and I’m sorry. I’m really gutted but if that’s what you want to do, then I’m sorry it’s ended like this.”

He said he exited through a fire exit and was taken to a converted container that served as an office, where he met with the director, PR personnel, welfare team, and a mental health nurse. He claimed they told him they were “gutted” about the decision but said it was an “accumulation of things” that led to his removal, and that lawyers had advised them to protect the Big Brother brand and ITV’s name.

Emotional Aftermath

Gilbert described feeling extremely low after his removal, saying the experience left him feeling “downtrodden” and “hollow.” He expressed concern about his future prospects, joking that he was “too big to get a job on the Tesco check outs” but “too small to make a living from the back of this.”

He broke down when speaking to his mother on the phone after his removal. “I just know that it sounds a lot worse than I think it was,” he said. “Would my family want to cut ties with me? My world had been turned upside down.” Gilbert said he felt producers knew his controversial nature from the audition process, where he was political and opinionated, and he believed he was serving as someone who would “spark debate” in the house.

Public and Official Reactions

Following his removal, Gilbert did not appear on the traditional post-eviction episode of Big Brother’s Late and Live show. His local parish council in Finchingfield is considering misconduct action against him due to complaints from residents about his behavior on the program. The council is seeking advice from monitoring officers at Braintree District Council regarding potential steps they can take.

Public reaction to Gilbert’s revealed comments has been strong, with many viewers expressing shock that he wasn’t removed sooner. One social media user commented: “George got warnings for saying ‘Hitler was misguided’ and he wanted to ‘procreate with [his] kind’ and they STILL kept him in there.” Others questioned why ITV platformed him despite his views, with one person noting: “BB has really fumbled this. He should not have been given a platform – now his voice is only louder.”

ITV has maintained its original position, reiterating that “following repeated use of unacceptable language and behaviour, George has been removed from the Big Brother House with immediate effect.” The broadcaster confirmed that Gilbert’s final comments were not aired because they were contrary to broadcast standards, and all housemates receive training in respect, dignity, and inclusion before entering the house.

Gilbert ended his video by thanking those who had sent him supportive messages and acknowledging that his future plans are uncertain, though he may explore political podcasting.
