A surprise proposal plan went very wrong in the latest episode of Ghosts. In “The Proposal,” which aired on December 4, 2025, Sam Arondekar’s attempt to create a perfect moment for her sister-in-law Bela and boyfriend Eric fell apart after a ghost got involved. Meanwhile, Issac tried to win over the basement ghosts by fighting in their secret fight club. The episode blended romantic comedy chaos with the ghosts’ unique social politics.

The episode, written by Sophia Lear and directed by Christine Gernon, brought back guest stars Punam Patel as Bela and Andrew Leeds as Eric. It showed how living with ghosts can create problems no one expects.

Sam’s Plan for a Perfect Proposal Creates Chaos

The trouble started when Bela visited Woodstone Mansion. She told Sam that her boyfriend, Eric, seemed ready to propose. He had asked for her ring size and planned a trip. Excited to possibly be the maid of honor, Sam hatched a plan. She called Eric and convinced him to pretend to cancel the trip. The real plan was for him to surprise Bela with a proposal at the mansion.

Sam and Jay did not tell Bela about this. They let her believe the proposal was off. This made Bela very upset. She started to question her entire relationship with Eric.

This was when the ghost Sasappis entered the situation. Feeling sad because his living friend Joan had not visited, Sass used his ghostly power to enter Bela’s dream to offer comfort. In the dream, the two bonded over their shared sadness. One thing led to another, and they had a dream hookup.

The next morning, Sass told Sam and Jay what happened in the dream. He felt guilty. At the same time, Sam finally told Bela the truth about Eric’s real plan for a surprise proposal. Bela then felt guilty about her dream encounter with Sass. Sam and Jay advised her to keep the dream a secret from Eric to avoid hurting him.

Eric’s Discovery and the Breakup

The plan to hide the secret failed completely. Eric was already hiding inside a large dishwasher delivery box in the mansion, waiting for the right moment to propose. From inside the box, he overheard the entire conversation about Bela’s dream hookup with Sass.

Eric came out of the box feeling hurt and betrayed. Even though it was “just a dream,” he was troubled by Bela’s connection to a ghost. He told Bela he needed space to think.

“I need some space to think since Belaโ€™s hooking up with a ghost is very triggering for me,” Eric said in the episode.

Sasappis tried to fix the problem by entering Eric’s dream. He found Eric in a peaceful dream about painting like Bob Ross. Sass tried to explain that the dream with Bela was a meaningless glitch. This helped Eric calm down a little, but doubts about the relationship remained.

Later, Jay found Bela upset in the kitchen. He helped her realize an important truth. Bela was more afraid of being single and starting over than she was excited about a future specifically with Eric. As they talked, another surprise happened. Eric was hiding again, this time in a produce carton. He heard Bela’s confession. To make things more awkward, Eric’s parents, Ginny and Steve, were also hiding in the recycling bins. They had flown in for the proposal.

With everything out in the open, Bela and Eric decided to break up mutually. There would be no proposal.

Issac Fights for a Place in the Basement

While the proposal drama unfolded upstairs, Issac faced his own challenges downstairs. After losing his usual spot, Issac was living in the basement with the ghosts who died from cholera. He found their ways strange, like sleeping standing up. However, he needed to win their support. Issac was running for Ghost Representative against Flower, and he needed the basement ghosts’ votes.

Issac’s campaign hit a problem when the basement ghost Nancy caught him sleeping on a comfy couch upstairs instead of in the basement. She accused him of not being a true “man of the people” and said he could never represent them.

To prove himself, Nancy gave Issac a task. He had to participate in the basement ghosts’ secret fight club and battle a large, silent ghost named Trunk, who died in a logging accident. Pete, a ghost who loves professional wrestling, tried to coach Issac for the fight.

The fight did not go well for Issac. Trunk quickly knocked him down. However, Issac kept getting back up, showing determination. He lost the fight but won something more important.

“Nancy revealed that the basement ghosts accept him as one of their own as he showed courage and stood strong against the Trunk,” according to a recap.

By not giving up, Issac finally earned the respect and a place among the basement dwellers.

A Surprise Proposal That Actually Worked

After the failed proposal and breakup, the episode ended with a different romantic moment. Jay felt bad about how everything turned out. He decided to create a special proposal moment for Sam, the one he had originally imagined for Eric and Bela.

He set up a romantic scene for the two of them. With a ring hidden in a martini glass, Jay proposed to Sam. She happily said yes. This sweet moment provided a happy ending to an episode full of comedic missteps.

Ghosts airs new episodes on CBS on Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. ET. Episode 7, “The Proposal,” is available to stream on Paramount+. The next episode, “The Life and Times of Esther Greene,” will air on December 11, 2025.
