The second season of Hazbin Hotel has arrived, bringing with it a major heavenly twist and a surprising connection to one of history’s most infamous unsolved cases. The show uses the backstory of a redeemed character to shed new light on the identity of Jack the Ripper, the notorious serial killer from Victorian London.
In the premiere episodes, fans finally learned how the snake-like sinner Sir Pentious earned his redemption and arrived in Heaven. His story included a dark secret from his past life that directly involved the mysterious killer.
The Secret Sir Pentious Carried to Hell
While being questioned in Heaven, Sir Pentious shared details of his human life. He explained that he was once an inventor named Pendleton living in Victorian London. He was socially anxious and often watched people from his window to feel less alone.
One night, he witnessed a terrifying event from his window. He saw a man he recognized murder a woman on the street below. Pendleton knew the killer personally—the man was one of his clients, a person with significant influence in the community. Fearing the consequences, Pendleton chose to stay silent. He never reported what he saw to the police.
His inaction had devastating consequences. The killer he failed to stop went on to murder five more women. Pentious believed that this act of cowardice, allowing a murderer to continue his spree, was a key reason he was sent to Hell.
The Clear Link to Jack the Ripper
The details from Sir Pentious’s story create a direct parallel to the real-world Jack the Ripper case. The historical killer was active in the Whitechapel district of London in 1888, exactly the kind of setting described. His victims were women, and he was never caught, his true identity remaining a mystery for over a century.
The show visually reinforces this connection. During the flashback to the murder Pentious witnessed, a dark, ominous figure is shown looking back towards the window, but his face is not revealed. This mirrors the real-world mystery surrounding the Ripper’s identity.
The series has previously included references to real-life infamous figures, such as a version of Jeffrey Dahmer, making the Jack the Ripper connection a consistent story choice.
What the Clues Reveal About the Killer
By providing specific details about the killer, Hazbin Hotel subtly points a finger at a possible identity. The two most critical clues from Sir Pentious’s testimony are that the killer was his client and a well-respected, influential member of the community.
These details align with some of the real historical suspects. Among the many theories, two suspects often mentioned fit this profile:
- Aaron Kominski: A barber who served wealthy clients, giving him a degree of status and community influence.
- Montague John Druitt: A barrister, a profession that carries inherent respect and power.
The show suggests that the killer’s social standing was the very reason Pentious felt too afraid to speak up, allowing the murders to continue unchecked.
Jack the Ripper’s Presence in the Hellaverse
While the human killer’s identity is hinted at in Hazbin Hotel, a demonic version of the character already exists within the larger “Hellaverse.” In the spin-off series Helluva Boss, a character named Jack the Ripper or “The Ripper” appears as a secondary antagonist.
This version is a narcissistic serial killer who continues to target sex workers and adult film stars in Hell. He holds the unusual and forbidden ability to travel between the different Rings of Hell, which has made him a wanted enemy, particularly in the Lust Ring. He is depicted as a tall, well-dressed demon from the Victorian era, and his modus operandi remains brutally violent.
It is not yet clear if the human killer witnessed by Sir Pentious will appear as a character in future episodes of Hazbin Hotel, or if his role was solely as part of Pentious’s redemption story.
