Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, is admired for her grace and commitment to royal duties. However, behind the public persona lies a love for adventurous outdoor activities, including a secret passion for diving and cold water swimming, which she enjoys away from the spotlight.
Kate’s Diving Adventures
In March 2022, Kate Middleton and Prince William participated in a week-long Caribbean tour to honor Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee. The couple managed to escape their busy schedule for a snorkeling session in the Bahamas with Coral Vita, an initiative dedicated to coral farming and marine conservation.
Photographer Matt Porteous captured the couple during their underwater adventure, showing them in snorkeling gear amidst vibrant marine life. Kate was noted for wearing her iconic sapphire engagement ring, previously owned by Princess Diana, even underwater.
Beyond snorkeling, Kate is a certified Advanced Open Water Diver, a qualification she earned in 2015 through the Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI). This certification allows her to dive as deep as 30 meters, a testament to her adventurous spirit.
Kate’s love for diving runs in the family. The Middletons frequently vacationed in Mustique, where she likely completed her diving training. William, a seasoned diver, also shares this interest and has served as president of the British Sub-Aqua Club (BSAC) since 2014.
Cold Water Swimming: Kate’s Unique Passion
While diving is a shared passion with Prince William, Kate has a lesser-known love for cold water swimming—a hobby William doesn’t particularly enjoy. Cold water swimming involves plunging into unheated outdoor waters, often during chilly conditions.
During an appearance on Mike Tindall’s podcast, The Good, The Bad and The Rugby, Kate revealed her enthusiasm for outdoor activities, saying:
“I can always remember being physical, using our bodies, whether it’s walking, climbing the Lake District, in Scotland, [or] swimming from a young age.”
Kate expressed her deep love for swimming in icy water, saying:
“The colder, the better. I absolutely love it. Slightly to the point where William’s [saying], ‘You’re crazy,’ and it’s dark, and it’s raining. I will go and seek out cold water. I love it.”
