The second season of Apple TV+ thriller Hijack reached its conclusion on March 4, 2026, with an explosive final episode titled โ€œTerminal.โ€ The episode delivered a high-stakes resolution to Sam Nelsonโ€™s underground hostage crisis, revealing the true mastermind behind the plot and the fates of key characters. Here is a complete recap of the finale and its ending explained.

The Final Plan Unfolds

As the episode begins, Sam (Idris Elba) and train driver Otto (Christian Nรคthe) have regained control of the U-Bahn carriage after the chaotic events of Episode 7. With passengers still on board and bombs attached beneath the train, Sam remains committed to seeing the handover through. He receives a recorded message from his ex-wife Marsha (Christine Adams), proving she is alive but still in danger in the Scottish wilderness. This confirmation forces Sam to continue following the orders of the shadowy figures manipulating him .

The authorities, including German police chief Ada Winter (Christiane Paul) and British intelligence officer Olivia (Clare-Hope Ashitey), now understand that Sam is a coerced participant rather than the mastermind. However, they cannot stop the train without risking detonation .

The Truth About the Mastermind

The finale reveals that the entire operation was orchestrated from inside a prison cell. Stuart Atterton (Neil Maskell), the lead hijacker from Season 1, has been directing events using a smuggled mobile phone hidden inside a soap bar . Stuart contacts MI5 officer Robert Lang (Arsher Ali), who has been posing as a loyal agent while secretly working for the criminal organization known as the Cheapside Firm.

Stuartโ€™s plan was never simply to free John Bailey-Brown (Ian Burfield). His true objective was to have Bailey-Brown killed on the train alongside Sam, eliminating witnesses and loose ends from the Season 1 hijacking . Lang is ordered to escort Bailey-Brown to the rendezvous point and pull the trigger himself.

Marsha Fights Back in Scotland

While Sam negotiates aboard the train, Marsha continues her survival story in the remote Scottish countryside. Hunted by two operatives (Jessica Hardwick and Jamie Mitchie), she uses her knowledge of the terrain to evade capture. As a police helicopter searches the area with low fuel, Marsha doubles back to the cabin where she was hiding and starts a large fire. The smoke draws the helicopterโ€™s attention, and rescue arrives just as her pursuers close in. She is pulled to safety moments before they can reach her .

The Handover at Britz-Sud

The train arrives at the designated exchange point, the above-ground station Britz-Sud. Sam releases all the passengers, sending Otto out to guide them to safety. Otto hesitates to leave Sam alone, but Sam assures him he saved lives by cooperating .

Lang arrives with Bailey-Brown in custody. Bailey-Brown grows suspicious when he realizes this does not feel like a standard prisoner transfer. Meanwhile, intelligence analyst Peter Faber (Toby Jones) discovers the body of Linder, the German agent Lang murdered in Episode 7. Faber alerts command that Lang is the inside man .

Lang boards the empty train with Bailey-Brown, securing him in a seat. He then moves through the carriage searching for Sam.

Sam and Otto Escape

Sam is not alone. Otto ignored Samโ€™s instructions and remained aboard, hiding in the driverโ€˜s cab. As Lang searches, Otto starts the train moving back into the tunnel. Lang does not want to detonate the bombs while trapped underground with himself, so he cannot trigger the explosives .

Sam confronts Lang inside the tunnel. The train slams to a halt. Lang escapes on foot through the darkness and detonates the bombs, destroying the train in a fiery explosion. He calls Stuart to report the mission complete and request an escape route now that his intelligence cover is blown.

However, Sam and Otto escaped moments before the explosion. Sam pursues Lang above ground into the Berlin streets. Both men are cornered by armed police. Rather than surrender, Lang raises his weapon and is shot dead by officers .

Brown Dies and the Conspiracy Ends

John Bailey-Brown dies in the train explosion. His death, along with Langโ€™s, severs Stuartโ€™s connection to the outside operation. Back in London, Detective Daniel Zain (Max Beesley) tracks the call Lang made to Stuartโ€™s prison phone. This provides enough evidence to prove Stuart orchestrated the entire plot from his cell. Stuart is now exposed, though his fate remains open should the series continue .

What the Ending Means for Sam

The finale closes with Sam calling Marsha. Both survived. The passengers are safe. The trains are running again. But showrunner Jim Field Smith explains that Samโ€™s future is deliberately ambiguous.

โ€œHe finishes talking to Marsha, as we roll the credits, itโ€™s like, does he just walk off and then gets a little tap on the shoulder like, โ€˜Oh, by the way, youโ€˜re definitely under arrestโ€™?โ€ Smith told TV Insider .

Smith emphasizes that Sam made active choices throughout the season. He could have refused to participate, even if it meant Marsha might die. Instead, he endangered 200 passengers to seek answers about his sonโ€™s death. This makes Sam โ€œmorally questionableโ€ rather than a straightforward hero .

Potential charges could include aiding and abetting a known criminal or accessory to murder. However, authorities now understand he was coerced. Any Season 3 would need to address whether Sam faces legal consequences or walks free.
