The long-running debate about who will play the next James Bond has finally lost one of its biggest names. Idris Elba, the 53-year-old British actor known for Luther and The Wire, has clearly stated he was never in the running to replace Daniel Craig as 007.

Speaking to People magazine during the premiere of his new movie Masters of the Universe, Elba gave a straight answer about the casting gossip that has followed him for over ten years. The actor did not leave any room for doubt about his place in the Bond conversation.

โ€œMy nameโ€™s not getting thrown out, no way,โ€ Elba told People. โ€œTheyโ€™re going younger. And I wish them all the luck of the world. I canโ€™t wait โ€” itโ€™s going to be amazing.โ€

The actor went even further to clear up the misunderstanding. He stated plainly that he was never a real choice for the part, despite what many fans thought over the years.

โ€œIโ€™m honestly not in the race ever,โ€ he said. โ€œI wasnโ€™t in the race in the first place.โ€

Amazon MGM Officially Starts Search for New 007

Elbaโ€™s comments come at a key time for the James Bond franchise. Earlier this month, on May 14, 2026, Amazon MGM Studios confirmed that the official search for the next James Bond had started. The studio posted on X that casting was underway, though they did not share specific details about who they were looking at.

The next Bond film, tentatively called Bond 26, will be the first movie made under Amazon MGMโ€™s full control of the series. The studio gained rights to the franchise after buying MGM and later making a deal with long-time Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson.

Denis Villeneuve is set to direct the new Bond movie, with Steven Knight writing the script. Nina Gold, the casting director known for her work on Game of Thrones and Star Wars, has been hired to lead the search for the next actor to play the MI6 spy.

A Decade of Bond Rumours Finally Laid to Rest

The talk about Elba playing James Bond started way back in 2011. For years, fans pushed for him to become the first Black actor to take on the role. The rumour got even louder in 2014 after a leaked email from a film executive suggested Elba should be the next 007.

Elba had spoken about the Bond speculation before. In 2023, on the SmartLess podcast, he said he felt flattered by the attention but also uncomfortable with how the conversation turned. He noted that some of the reactions to the idea of him playing Bond became โ€œdisgusting and off-puttingโ€ when race entered the discussion.

In December 2025, Elba briefly made fans wonder again when he posted a TikTok video from Madame Tussauds London. The video showed him standing next to wax figures of all six Bond actors. His wife Sabrina Elba later said on Good Morning America that she had encouraged him to post it, joking that she โ€œre-fuelled the fireโ€ behind the rumours.

Elba Open to Playing a Villain Instead

While the lead role is not happening for Elba, he has not completely closed the door on the Bond world. During the Masters of the Universe press tour, he was asked if he would ever play a villain in a Bond film. He did not say no to that idea.

He also joked with his co-star Camila Mendes at the event, telling her she could be a Bond girl after she showed excitement about the franchise.

Elbaโ€™s next film, Masters of the Universe, comes out in theatres on June 5, 2026. He plays Duncan, a key ally to the hero He-Man. At the premiere, Elba shared that the franchise was important to him growing up, saying, โ€œMasters of the Universe was my thing.โ€

Younger Actors Now Lead the Race for 007

With Elba out of the picture, the focus has now turned to a younger group of actors. Names that keep coming up in reports include Jacob Elordi, Callum Turner, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. There have also been reports that Tom Francis, a 26-year-old British actor, has auditioned for the part.

Producer David Gold said at the Cannes Film Festival that whoever gets the role must โ€œooze sex appeal.โ€ The next Bond is expected to sign on for at least three films.

The studio has not confirmed any names yet. At CinemaCon last month, Courtenay Valenti, head of film at Amazon MGM Studios, said they are taking their time with the decision. โ€œWeโ€™re taking the time to do this with care and deep respect,โ€ she said. โ€œIt is the dream of a lifetime for all of us to bring audiences this next chapter.โ€

Daniel Craig last played Bond in No Time to Die in 2021, ending a run that started with Casino Royale in 2006. Other actors who have played 007 include Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, and Pierce Brosnan.
