What Happened in Episode 1 – I’m Looking For a Zombie Premiere Recap
Episode 1, titled “Searching for Dad,” set up the entire story. Aki lives in an isolated village thirteen years after the Red Day, a mysterious outbreak that killed 90 percent of humanity and turned them into zombies. Aki belongs to a generation with no memory of the world before the collapse.
Aki made a promise to her father before he left the village. She told him she would be the one to find him and kill him if he turned into a zombie. That promise drives her entire journey.
Aki escaped her village with her childhood friends Haru and Natsuki. Outside, they discovered a world overrun with zombies, but also a world that was vast, strange, and fascinating to them. The trio met Yu and Sakura after rescuing them from a zombie horde. Yu and Sakura come from a more academically minded village, creating a group with a mix of practical skills and book knowledge.
The group took shelter in a home improvement store, which they mistook for a palace at first because of all the items they had never seen before. The episode balanced comedy with survival, showing the group fighting zombies with fertilizer bombs and other improvised methods.
A reviewer from Beneath the Tangles described the premiere this way: “The characters are lovable—all of them, but Aki especially with her single-mindedness and cute, bloodthirsty energy”.
What to Expect in Episode 2 – Story Details and New Characters
Episode 2 is titled “Searching for Companions” (仲間さがしてます). The story picks up with the group using the home improvement store as their new base. They work on securing water and food while building a stable living routine. Each member takes on a role within the group.
Aki brings up an idea: she wants to develop the film her father left behind. This becomes a key emotional thread for the episode.
While the group heads to a river to get water, they start playing around and enjoying themselves. But Yu remains on guard. Yu is wary of “visitors” who will arrive soon. This warning adds tension to an episode that otherwise focuses on the group’s daily life and bonding.
The episode is directed by Shinya Une with storyboards by Shin’ya Une, unit direction by Tomoki Watanabe, and chief animation direction by Narumi Shimoji.
