What Happened in Episode 1 – Full Recap of Engine Start
Episode 1, titled “Engine Start”, introduced the world of Vertex Force and the Toudou family. Akira Todo is a middle school student living in northern Okinawa with his older sister Haruka and their mother, who runs a café .
Two weeks before the episode begins, a mysterious event called the Power Down caused every computer on Earth to crash at once. A white-haired woman with a robotic presence rode a satellite down from orbit, triggering global chaos. Huge parts of the world’s electrical infrastructure were still dead when the story started .
Haruka has a special power called Engine, inherited from their father. Engine lets her summon a giant mecha that gives her gravity-based abilities. Akira, on the other hand, did not inherit the power, and he feels inferior because his sister always has to protect him .
The family’s secret is that their father was a refugee from the planet Theia. The Theians fled to Earth to escape a robot revolution led by an AI called EDVA. When EDVA threatened to follow them to Earth, the father went back into space to fight it and never returned .
The episode’s major action scene happened when a VTOL aircraft, damaged by the Power Down, was about to crash on top of Akira. Haruka used her Engine to force-land the aircraft, revealing her powers in public for the first time .
A hostile machine appeared soon after – a giant robotic skeleton with a creepy design. It attacked Akira and Haruka, targeting them because of their Theian blood. Haruka fought it off with her mother’s blessing, doing better than expected and knocking out at least two of its “health bars” before the fight turned against her .
When the machine seemed to have the upper hand, Akira manifested his own Engine for the first time. He threw a pitchfork through the creature’s eye and came to his sister’s rescue . The episode ended with both siblings now awakened to their powers, ready to face the coming threat.
“The first episode of Vertex Force lays the groundwork for what will be an alien mecha action anime.”
This is how a reviewer from Deegram described the premiere .
What to Expect in Episode 2 – Vertex
Episode 2 is titled “Vertex” and picks up right after Akira’s first Engine activation. The official episode preview shows Eleanor pointing a gun at Akira, while Haruka faces a direct Engine-to-Engine clash with another pilot .
The episode will explore what happens when two Engine users fight each other for the first time. The title “Vertex” suggests this is where the show’s central conflict – the clash between humans with Theian powers – truly begins.
New cast members join the story in episode 2. Kazuki Ura voices Alan, and Nana Mizuki voices EDVA, the mysterious AI who destroyed Theia and is now pursuing the Theian refugees on Earth .
“EDVA, whom I played, is a mysterious and powerful enemy who stands in the way of Akira and his friends. What is her purpose?”
Nana Mizuki said this about her character in a statement ahead of the series premiere .
The episode will also show more of Eleanor Northbrook, voiced by Ami Koshimizu. Eleanor appears to be a military figure connected to the Engine program, and her confrontation with Akira in the preview suggests she has a specific interest in the Toudou siblings .
The ending theme song, “Emerald” by Hashimero, continues to play over the credits. The opening theme, “Synchro Blue” by ClariS, was released digitally on October 2, followed by a CD single on November 11 as ClariS’ 32nd single .

Why You Should Watch Vertex Force
Vertex Force is an original anime, meaning it is not based on a manga, light novel, or game. Everything about the story is new and nobody knows where it is going. This is rare in the current anime landscape and gives the series a sense of discovery that adaptations cannot match.
The series is directed by Kazuhiro Takamura, who is known for creating stories with cute girls, cool mecha, and energetic action. Takamura himself said that he likes these elements, and Vertex Force combines all three in a way that is meant to appeal to fans of mecha and character-driven stories alike .
The show’s take on mecha is unusual. The Engine does not work like a traditional piloted robot. It is more like a remote-controlled stand that appears behind the user and acts on its own as well as with them . This gives the fight scenes a different feel from most mecha anime, where the robot is a vehicle the character sits inside.
The setting is another strong point. Okinawa is not a common location for anime, and the series uses its seaside towns and karate culture as part of the story. Akira is seen reading a guide on Ryukyuan karate in the first episode, and his training plays a role in how he fights .
The voice cast is full of experienced performers. Makoto Koichi voices Akira, Kaede Hondo voices Haruka, and the supporting cast includes Ami Koshimizu, Megumi Han, Rie Takahashi, Kazuki Ura, and Nana Mizuki .
The series is scheduled for 12 episodes, running weekly from October 3 to December 19, 2026 . With only a few episodes aired so far, the story is still building its world and characters. Episode 2 will be the first real test of whether the show can deliver on the promise of its premiere.
