Netflix recently showcased first looks for seven upcoming Korean films during the 29th Busan International Film Festival (BIFF). These films, set to release on the OTT platform, cover a variety of genres from thrillers to animated romances. Here’s a closer look at what’s in store.
1. Revelations
Based on the webcomic Gyeshirok by Yeon Sang Ho and Choi Kyu Seok, Revelations tells the story of a pastor who takes justice into his own hands after becoming convinced it is his divine duty to punish a suspect in a missing-person case. Ryu Jun Yeol and Shin Hyun Been star in the film, which is directed by Yeon Sang Ho, known for Train to Busan and Hellbound.
2. Love Untangled
A coming-of-age romance comedy, Love Untangled is set in 1998 Busan. The film follows a 19-year-old girl who, struggling with her curly hair, wishes to straighten it to overcome her insecurities and confess her love. Her plans change when she gets involved with a transfer student. Directed by Namkoong Sun, the cast includes Gong Myung, Shin Eun Soo, and Kang Mina.
3. Good News
Set in 1970, Good News follows a tense mission to safely land a hijacked plane. An unidentified problem solver, an Air Force lieutenant, and a government official team up to ensure the safe return of passengers. The film features Sul Kyung Gu, Hong Kyung, and Ryoo Seung Bum, and is directed by Byun Sung Hyun, who also worked on Kill Boksoon and Kingmaker.
4. The Great Flood
The Great Flood is a survival thriller about a massive flood that devastates the planet. The story centers on An Na, an AI researcher, and Hee Zo, a security team member, both trapped in a sinking building. Directed by Kim Byung Woo and starring Park Hae Soo and Kim Da Mi, the film promises an intense battle for survival.
5. Mantis
Mantis is a remake of the French series La Mante, a gripping thriller where a serial killer helps the police track down a copycat murderer under the condition that their son is the lead detective. Directed by Lee Tae Seong, the cast includes Im Siwan, Park Gyu Young, and Jo Woo Jin. The film is a spin-off of Kill Boksoon, with Park Gyu Young and Im Siwan also appearing in Squid Game Season 2.
6. Lost in Starlight
Netflix’s first Korean animated feature, Lost in Starlight, follows a long-distance relationship between an astronaut and a musician, set against the backdrop of space. Kim Tae Ri and Hong Kyung lend their voices to the characters in this touching romance, written by Han Ji Won.
7. Wall to Wall
A man finally fulfills his dream of owning an apartment, only to have it turn into a nightmare due to strange noises from neighboring floors and financial difficulties. The thriller stars Kang Ha Neul, Yum Hye Ran, and Seo Hyun Woo, with Kim Tae Joon directing.
