The 69-year-old acting legend, best known for playing Sarah Connor in the Terminator franchise, made a surprise appearance in the Season 4 premiere of the AMC thriller. Linda Hamilton Opens Up About the Personal Connection to Her Role
While the scene is fictional, Hamilton brought something very real to it. In interviews with People magazine, she revealed that her mother, Barbara K. Holt, also lived with dementia for 25 years before she passed away . The connection between her mother and the character goes far beyond just sharing the same first name.
Hamilton described a surreal moment during her costume fitting that made the role feel like fate. Since the show is set in the 1970s, the costume department pulled out period-appropriate shoes for her to wear. When Hamilton saw them, she was stunned.
“I swear to you, I went in for the fitting and the whole thing takes place in the ’70s, and they pulled out some shoes for my character that were my mother’s shoes,” Hamilton told People. “I mean, they were the exact colour of taupe that my mother would wear to extend the leg. And it was a very specific colour from the ’70s, ’80s. It just felt really sweet to be doing this to kind of honour her” .
For Hamilton, playing Barbara Sena was a way to process her mother’s long battle with the disease. She also wanted to show the reality of dementia in a way that felt honest. She explained that she has spent a lot of time thinking about how people experience memory loss and whether they are aware of what is happening to them.
“I have spent a lot of time wondering, ‘When does a person know? Do you know?’” she said. “I never really witnessed that part of dementia where someone really knows that they’re losing it. So, it is a fine balance [to portray]” .
She added that she has friends currently going through mental decline, and watching them struggle reinforced her desire to play the part accurately . Through the role, she hopes to “show the poignance of someone” with the disease and highlight how “people around them are missing them while they’re right there” .
A Change From Tough Guy Roles
Fans who know Hamilton as the muscle-flexing, shotgun-wielding Sarah Connor might be surprised to see her play such a vulnerable character. But that is exactly why she wanted the job. Hamilton admitted that she feels she has “maxed out the tough guy” roles and is looking for something different at this stage of her career .
“This was just a very sweet little scene,” she said. “I feel like I really maxed out the tough guy, and I just don’t want to play tough the rest of my career” .
She described this phase of her life as “liberating.” She enjoys that the roles coming to her now are not based on maintaining a certain look or meeting beauty standards. Instead, she can simply show up and be “a human being who’s 69 years old on film” .
Hamilton also revealed that she agreed to the cameo because of her long-standing friendship with Dark Winds executive producer George R. R. Martin. The two worked together decades ago on the late 80s TV series Beauty and the Beast .
“I love George R. R.,” Hamilton said. “He was a writer on Beauty and the Beast. I have seen him since Beauty and the Beast and his journey has just been so great and so far from Beauty and the Beast. He’s now just the king. So, when George R. R. calls, you say yes” .
She even joked that she would have done the role for free if it meant she could meet Martin’s fellow executive producer, the late Robert Redford. Sadly, Redford passed away in September 2025 at age 89, and Hamilton never got the chance to meet him on set .
Will Linda Hamilton Return in Future Episodes?
As of now, AMC has not confirmed whether Hamilton will appear in more episodes of Season 4. Showrunner John Wirth is keeping quiet about her future on the show. Since her character is the wife of Gordo Sena, a recurring figure in the series, there is a chance viewers could see her again, but nothing has been announced . Wirth hinted that keeping cameos a secret is something the show enjoys doing, so fans will have to watch each new episode to find out .
