The wait for Tell Me Lies fans is officially over, but not in the way many had hoped. The addictive Hulu drama, which has kept viewers on edge with its toxic romance and shocking twists, has officially concluded with its third season. Leading lady Grace Van Patten, who plays Lucy Albright, is sharing her honest feelings about saying goodbye to the show and what fans can expect from the series finale.

The news broke on Monday, February 16, just hours before the final episode dropped on Hulu. Creator and showrunner Meaghan Oppenheimer took to Instagram to confirm that the show would not be returning for a fourth season. “After three amazing seasons of Tell Me Lies, tonight’s episode will be the series finale,” Oppenheimer wrote in her announcement .

For Van Patten, who has portrayed the complicated Lucy since the series premiered in 2022, the end of the road brings mixed emotions.

Grace Van Patten Reacts to the Show’s Conclusion

Van Patten, 29, had previously hinted that season 3 could serve as a satisfying ending even before the official announcement. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter days before the finale, she shared her thoughts on the possibility of the show concluding.

“I really believe that it could go both ways. I love the ending so much. It’s an amazing ending, if it was the end,” Van Patten explained . She also left the door open for more, adding that Oppenheimer is a talented writer who “could think something up to continue the story.” Ultimately, she admitted she’d “be very happy either way.”

Now that the ending is official, the actress is processing what it means to leave Lucy behind. Oppenheimer’s own words captured the sentiment perfectly, describing the experience as “bittersweet” in her Instagram announcement . This feeling of sweet sadness echoes what many cast members are likely experiencing as they wrap up a project that built a passionate fanbase over three seasons.

Why Season 3 Is the End

According to Oppenheimer, the decision to end Tell Me Lies with season 3 was always part of the plan. “This was always the ending my writing team and I had in mind, and we are insanely proud of it,” she shared in her social media post .

The showrunner revealed that the overwhelming positive response to season 3 actually made the team pause and consider whether there was another way to extend the story. “Your incredible response to this season inspired us to explore whether there was another organic way to continue the story, but ultimately we felt it had reached its natural conclusion,” she wrote .

Oppenheimer emphasized that her main goal was protecting the quality of the show. She expressed gratitude that they could “tell a complete story with an intentional ending,” noting that this is “a privilege very few shows get” .

What Van Patten Has Said About Season 3’s Ending

Months before the finale aired, Van Patten already knew the ending would leave an impression. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE back in November 2025, she shared her excitement about how everything wraps up.

“I just want it to come out,” an eager Van Patten said at the time. “I’m so curious to hear what people think โ€” and I’m obsessed with the ending. I’m really excited for the reactions to that” .

The actress also teased that season 3 would push the characters further than ever before. “Everything’s coming to a head, and everything’s getting more and more tangled and intertwined,” she explained. She even admitted she was “scared for the audience” because the drama reaches “the point of no return” where characters “actually face consequences, which is new” .

Van Patten described season 3 as “the peak of all these people’s worst decisions” . For a show built on messy choices and toxic behavior, that’s saying something.

The Journey of Lucy Albright

Playing Lucy for three seasons required Van Patten to dig deep into understanding a character who often makes questionable choices. She opened up about this process in a joint interview with co-star Jackson White (Stephen DeMarco) for Us Weekly.

“It’s like any role I play where in order for the audience to understand them, we have to really understand them,” Van Patten explained. “That means potentially justifying things we as humans might not justify. But in order to give service to the character, we have to find ways to understand that and understand their choices and find the truth in them” .

She called this exploration “the fun part” and expressed excitement about going through Lucy’s “actions and impulses” over three seasons .

Van Patten also reflected on what keeps Lucy and Stephen stuck in their destructive cycle. “They definitely share something โ€” whatever that is and if it’s obvious or not โ€” where they are really drawn to each other for some reason,” she told Us Weekly. “They feel seen by each other in a really, really messed up way. But it’s the only reason why this cycle is almost impossible to break” .

She concluded that while Lucy and Stephen “should not be together and it’s not healthy,” they do get “something out of each other that’s really addicting” .

What Happens in the Tell Me Lies Series Finale

The series finale dropped on Tuesday, February 17, at 12 a.m. ET on Hulu . For viewers in the UK, all three seasons are available to stream on Disney Plus .

The final episode brings closure to the chaotic storylines that have unfolded over three seasons. Based on Carola Lovering’s 2018 novel, the show follows Lucy and Stephen from their meeting at the fictional Baird College in 2007 through eight years of their tumultuous on-and-off relationship .

Season 3 picked up with Lucy and Stephen back together at the start of spring semester. According to the official synopsis, “While they promise things will be different this time, past indiscretions hinder their best intentions, and Lucy finds herself embroiled in a controversy she wants nothing to do with” .

The season also introduced new characters, including Iris Apatow as Amanda, described as “a bubbly but fragile college freshman keeping a big secret,” and Costa D’Angelo as Alex, “a psychology grad student and part-time drug dealer who has a complicated past with Bree” .

Fan Reactions to the Ending

The announcement that Tell Me Lies would end with season 3 sparked strong reactions from viewers who had grown attached to the messy friend group. Many took to social media to express their disappointment.

On X (formerly Twitter), fans shared their feelings about losing the show. One user wrote, “How does she expect me to prepare for this ending when I was already counting on the idea of getting another season? I refuse to accept it ending here I need more plsssss” . Another declared, “No I’m literally sobbing. So brutal to decide this” .

Some fans wished the show could continue despite its toxic appeal. “I would’ve let these people traumatise me for 10 seasons idc,” one viewer shared . Another added, “A shame cause i would’ve sat through six more seasons of this satanic friend group terrorizing each other and me” .

However, not everyone was upset about the decision. One fan offered a different perspective: “I know a lot of people will be upset, but I’m kind of obsessed with the idea of the show ending with unanswered questions. It gives viewers a reason to debate and revisit it years later, asking ‘what if?’ The show is messy, just like life, and not everything in life gets resolved” .

The Cast and Creative Team

Tell Me Lies brought together a talented ensemble cast including Spencer House as Wrigley, Sonia Mena as Pippa, Catherine Missal as Bree, Alicia Crowder as Diana, Branden Cook as Evan, and Tom Ellis as Oliver . Ellis, who is Oppenheimer’s real-life husband, joined the cast in season 2.

Oppenheimer served as executive producer and showrunner, with Emma Roberts and Karah Preiss executive producing under their Belletrist banner . The series was produced by 20th Television for Hulu.

In her farewell message, Oppenheimer thanked fans for their support and teased future projects. “Thank you for loving our show. We are excited to bring you more stories in the near future,” she wrote .
