Creative Team and Production

The series is created and executive produced by Mark Herwick for Range Studios and Jeff Tomsic, who also directs. The show is executive produced by Danny McBride and Brandon James for Rough House Pictures, the production company behind HBO hits like “The Righteous Gemstones” and “Eastbound & Down”. This connection explains the show’s signature tone of finding humor in flawed characters and absurd situations.

Director Jeff Tomsic explained the rigorous story selection process, stating:

“The story selection process was quite long because we wanted people and stories that made you first think, โ€˜This person is insane!โ€™ But by the end, maybe made you think, โ€˜Maybe Iโ€™m the insane one. Maybe this person โ€” this witch, this mermaid or this man who had an arm bitten offโ€” maybe theyโ€™re not crazy.”

The show has been noted for its ability to balance comedy with a genuine appreciation for its subjects, avoiding simple mockery of the people involved.
