IU, the beloved K-pop star, has secured a legal victory against an individual who falsely accused her of copyright infringement. The court has ordered the accuser to pay IU 30 million KRW in damages.
Seoul Central District Court’s Ruling
On December 19, 2024, the Seoul Central District Court’s 29th Civil Division finalized the lawsuit filed by IU against the defendant, known only as A. The court ruled in favor of IU, ordering A to compensate the singer for the damage caused by the baseless accusations.
Details of the Case
The lawsuit stemmed from accusations made in May 2023, where the individual claimed IU had plagiarized six of her songs, including “Celebrity,” “The Red Shoes,” “Good Day,” and “Bbibbi.” IU was directly involved in composing only one song and producing another from this list. The police investigation concluded in August 2023, dismissing the claims as baseless. Following this, IU and her agency, EDAM Entertainment, pursued a damages lawsuit in September 2023.
Legal Proceedings and Defendant’s Absence
The accuser, who is reportedly living in the United States, did not attend the first scheduled hearing in July 2024. Due to the defendant’s non-response, the court proceeded with the trial through public notification, a process where court documents are made available for public viewing when direct delivery is not possible.
Broader Legal Actions by EDAM Entertainment
In addition to this case, EDAM Entertainment has filed lawsuits against approximately 180 individuals for various offenses including cyberbullying, additional false plagiarism allegations, and the creation and distribution of deepfake content.
IU’s Legal Victory
This ruling marks a significant moment for IU and her fans, known as Uaenas, reinforcing the legal protections for artists against unfounded claims. The court’s decision to award damages to IU underscores the importance of factual accuracy in public accusations.
