Actor Jamie Campbell Bower is closing his chapter as Vecna in Stranger Things with a surprise Broadway debut and the release of the final episodes. The actor recently made a special appearance in the Stranger Things stage play and opened up about finishing work on the Netflix series, marking the end of a transformative role that defined his career for years.

Bower surprised fans by appearing in the Broadway play Stranger Things: The First Shadow on Friday, December 19, 2025. He joined the cast for the final scene, reprising his role as the adult Henry Creelโ€”the man who becomes Vecna. His cameo connected the stage prequel, set in 1959, directly to the events of the television series. The moment received cheers and applause from the audience and was an emotional experience for Bower, who called it a “bizarre and also beautiful experience”.

This stage appearance comes just as the final episodes of Stranger Things Season 5 are set to release. Volume 2 premieres on Christmas Day, December 25, and The Finale drops on New Year’s Eve, December 31. For the actor, these events represent a full-circle moment, concluding a journey that began when he first auditioned for the mysterious role.

Bower’s Final Stint as the Villain in Netflix’s Epic Finale

With the fifth season’s conclusion, Bower has completed his work as the show’s ultimate villain. He described the emotional experience of filming his final scene for the series, calling it a mix of feelings. One social media post summarizing his comments noted he felt a blend of “relief, pride and a little sadness,” and that it felt like โ€œtaking the first breath of his lifeโ€.

When asked by El Paรญs if he thinks the series finale will meet fan expectations, Bower, who was a fan of the show before joining the cast, responded positively. โ€œAs a fan of the series, I think itโ€™s a beautiful and appropriate ending for a story we all know and love,โ€ he stated. He also described the final season as “emotional, explosive and big,” promising a major conclusion to the story.

From Audition to Icon: The Making of Vecna

Bowerโ€™s path to becoming Hawkins’ nightmare was secretive. When he first auditioned, he had no idea he was trying out for the role of Vecna. Instead of Stranger Things scripts, he was given scenes from movies like The Devil’s Advocate and Hellraiser to prepare. It wasn’t until a meeting with creators Matt and Ross Duffer that he learned the truth. โ€œThey asked me, โ€˜How comfortable would you be going full prosthetic?โ€™ And I said totally comfortable,โ€ Bower recalled.

The physical transformation into Vecna was a marathon. For Season 4, the prosthetic application process took approximately seven and a half hours, with another hour to remove it, leading to workdays that could exceed 17 hours. The suit, designed by makeup artist Barrie Gower, was based on a full-body cast of Bower and consisted of about 18 separate pieces to create the character’s distinctive, root-covered appearance.

Passing the Torch on Broadway

Bower’s Broadway cameo was a symbolic passing of the torch. In The First Shadow, the role of young Henry Creel is played by Louis McCartney, who received a Tony Award nomination for his performance. Following the surprise appearance, McCartney introduced Bower during the curtain call, praising his foundational work. โ€œHenry Creel is the dynamite of The First Shadow. Without you, nothing is possible,โ€ McCartney told him on stage.

Bower has expressed deep admiration for McCartneyโ€™s performance. โ€œI love Louisโ€ฆ to see someone like Louis who has also taken great care of this character feels so lovely,โ€ Bower told Netflix’s Tudum site. He noted that McCartney incorporated some of his own character choices while also creating something uniquely his own.

Reflecting on the character’s legacy beyond the screen, Bower told People Magazine, โ€œItโ€™s such an amazing and quite bizarre thing to have a character I created with Matt and Ross exist in what feels like perpetuity on stage played by various peopleโ€. While he sees his time as Vecna as complete, he remains open to theater, adding, โ€œIf the right show came along for me on Broadway, I would love to do itโ€.

The Two Sides of Henry Creel

For Bower, playing the villain has meant portraying two distinct personas: the terrifying monster Vecna and his human origin, Henry Creel. He describes a key difference in his approach to each. โ€œFrom the fourth season, Vecna has always seemed to me like a figure with a lot of resentmentโ€ฆ it drowns and buries a bit of his humanity,โ€ Bower explained in his interview with El Paรญs. โ€œWhereas with Henry, Iโ€™ve always felt that, beneath that anger, there is hope in him, there is that child who just needs loveโ€.

This complexity made the role a unique challenge. โ€œItโ€™s complicated when you play a character whose motives should not be clear to the other actors,โ€ he said. Having to hide the character’s true intentions was difficult for an actor who typically seeks โ€œthose big moments of telling the truthโ€.

A Villain’s Legacy in Hawkins and Beyond

As Stranger Things prepares to sign off, Vecnaโ€™s impact is undeniable. The character, first introduced in Season 4, was revealed to be the hidden mastermind behind the horrors in Hawkins from the very beginning, including the disappearance of Will Byers. Bowerโ€™s performance earned critical acclaim, including a nomination for Best Villain at the Critics’ Choice Super Awards.

The final battle for Hawkins begins with the release of Season 5, Volume 2 on December 25, followed by the series finale on December 31. Fans can also experience the finale in a communal setting, as Netflix is organizing special viewings of The Finale in select movie theaters across the United States and Canada on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
