The Apple TV+ series Cape Fear wrapped up its 10-episode run on July 31, 2026, with a finale that delivered the violent showdown audiences had been waiting for. But behind one of the most intense moments of the episode, there was a quiet moment of professionalism. Javier Bardem, who plays the vengeful Max Cady, made sure his young co-star felt safe before filming a scene where his character grabs her by the hair.
The Spanish actor, known for his chilling turns as Anton Chigurh in No Country for Old Men and Raoul Silva in Skyfall, once again proves he is a master at playing cunning villains. His portrayal of Max Cady in this adaptation of John D. MacDonald’s thriller novel The Executioners has been a highlight of the summer season. The series, originally billed as a limited 10-episode run by Apple, concluded with a finale titled “The Executioners”.
The Finale Showdown
The season finale brings the Bowden family’s conflict with Max Cady to a violent conclusion. Cady invades the Bowden home during a stormy night, placing Anna (Amy Adams) and Tom (Patrick Wilson) on a mock “trial” for colluding against him and threatening their children.
The episode culminates in a bloody confrontation. Tom eventually tackles Max into the backyard pool, but Anna convinces him to spare Cady’s life, saying “Let him die in a cage”. The family decides to let the court system deliver justice. The final scene shows the Bowden family grilling in their backyard on a sunny day, seemingly happy. But Anna’s smile slowly fades as she looks over her shoulder, and the screen cuts to X-ray vision with grim music—a suggestion of lingering trauma.
Showrunner Nick Antosca explained the meaning behind that final shot to People magazine. “I don’t necessarily think of it as a cliffhanger. I think of it as a suggestion of what life is gonna be like from now on,” he said. He added that he intends for the finale to be “intense and, hopefully, haunting”.
The Intense Hair-Grabbing Scene
Before the finale’s dramatic conclusion, there is a sequence where Max Cady grabs Natalie Bowden by the hair and captures her using zip ties, rendering her helpless. Natalie, played by Lily Collias, is the daughter of Anna and Tom, and Cady has spent much of the series manipulating her, even making her believe she might be his daughter.
For Collias, filming this scene required trust. She told Variety at the series’ finale screening in New York that Bardem made sure she was comfortable before they started rolling.
“We would go through such weird circumstances, it’s little things that make me still giggle to this day,” Collias said. “In Episode 10, there’s one point where he has to grab me by my hair, and before the scene, he’s like, ‘I’m so sorry, my love. Is it OK if I just — I’m going to grab you like that?’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, that’s fine.’ Then we start rolling and I see this thing coming up to me and I’m like, ‘What the f*ck?! Well, OK, that’s your job!’”
Bardem’s Approach to Intense Scenes
When asked about filming the intense finale scenes, Bardem smirked and explained how he has learned to lean into the “play” involved with acting as he has gotten older.
“For me, it’s more about a game,” Bardem said. “You use your imagination to jump in and step out of it. I respect everybody’s process, as long as those processes respect other people’s processes. For me, the fun part is to really be part of a group of people that imagine things that don’t exist, and they create it together based on the fact that it’s all a big lie.”
Collias also shared that despite the intense nature of the finale—which she described as feeling “almost like a play”—the atmosphere off-camera was surprisingly joyful.
“It was just the family and him in the house, and we were doing the most insane things and laughing so hard off camera. It felt like such a joy that it was actually a beautiful time,” she said.
However, she admitted that the intensity of Bardem’s performance lingered even after the cameras stopped rolling. “We’re playing cat and mouse, and then the cameras turn off, and I still feel like a mouse,” Collias said. “And he still feels like Tom from ‘Tom and Jerry.’”

Bardem’s Max Cady follows in the footsteps of Robert Mitchum (1962) and Robert De Niro (1991), but the actor brings his own approach to the role. The brilliance of Bardem’s performance lies in the long stretches of perceived stillness, which heighten the tension of the cat-and-mouse game he plays with the Bowden family.
The series is another take on the 1991 Martin Scorsese film, with Scorsese himself serving as an executive producer on the new show. While the storylines differ, both adaptations feature a scary, ruthless Max Cady who is out for revenge.
