Sony Pictures has released the first official trailer for Jumanji: Open World, the third and final movie in the rebooted franchise. The trailer shows a major shift in the series — instead of players getting trapped inside the game, the game characters break out into the real world.
The nearly three-minute preview gives audiences a look at what happens when the Jumanji video game escapes its console. Dr Smolder Bravestone (Dwayne Johnson), Franklin “Mouse” Finbar (Kevin Hart), Professor Sheldon “Shelly” Oberon (Jack Black), and Ruby Roundhouse (Karen Gillan) find themselves outside the game for the first time.
The Game Invades Reality
The trailer opens with a clear problem. Spencer (Alex Wolff) tells the group: “They’re video game characters, but they’re stuck in demo mode”. This means the avatars are glitched versions of themselves. They struggle to survive in a world they do not understand.
The action moves quickly. A dinosaur smashes into a diner. The group tries to run through city streets while animals from the game cause destruction. Ostriches, rhinoceroses, and giant lizards roam free in the real world.
The situation gets more complicated when the team attempts to send the avatars back into Jumanji. The plan fails. Spencer’s mother Janice (Marin Hinkle) ends up inside the game and becomes the avatar of Dr Bravestone. The trailer shows a funny confrontation between Spencer and his mother, with Spencer appearing as Ruby Roundhouse and his mother as Bravestone. At one point, Bravestone suddenly speaks with a Spanish accent, adding to the comedy.
Returning to the Franchise’s Roots
Jumanji: Open World brings the series back to where it started. The 1995 original movie starring Robin Williams had the game’s elements entering the real world. The new films have focused on characters being trapped inside the game. This time, the filmmakers have flipped that idea.
The movie pays tribute to Robin Williams and his legacy. At CinemaCon earlier this year, Johnson confirmed the film includes several tributes to Williams, whose performance in the original remains central to the series.
The Cast Returns
The movie brings back the full ensemble cast from the franchise. Dwayne Johnson returns as Dr Smolder Bravestone. Kevin Hart is back as Mouse Finbar. Jack Black reprises his role as Professor Shelly Oberon. Karen Gillan returns as Ruby Roundhouse.
The younger cast members also return. Alex Wolff, Madison Iseman, Morgan Turner, and Ser’Darius Blain reprise their roles as the teenagers who first discovered Jumanji.
Other returning cast members include Danny DeVito, Nick Jonas, Awkwafina, Rhys Darby, and Marin Hinkle. New faces joining the franchise include Dan Hildebrand, Jack Jewkes, and Brittany O’Grady.
Jake Kasdan returns as director. He also co-wrote the screenplay with Jeff Pinkner and Scott Rosenberg.
Release Date and Box Office Placement
Jumanji: Open World arrives in theatres on December 25, 2026. The film was originally scheduled for a December 11 release but Sony moved it to Christmas Day.
The Christmas release puts the movie in a competitive holiday window. It arrives just after Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday, which both open on December 18. Fans have dubbed the matchup “Dunesday”.
The rebooted franchise has been a major success for Sony. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) grossed nearly $1 billion worldwide. Jumanji: The Next Level (2019) followed with over $800 million. Together, the two films have made more than $1.7 billion globally.

What the Trailer Shows
The trailer gives audiences a clear idea of what to expect. The humour from the previous films remains. The action sequences are bigger. The stakes are higher because the chaos is happening in the real world, not inside a game.
The “demo mode” concept creates comedic moments throughout the trailer. The characters cannot function properly. Their movements do not always work in the real world. The group must figure out how to stop the chaos before it gets worse.
The movie serves as the final chapter of the franchise. Johnson has described Open World as the biggest instalment in the series.
