Katy Perry Reveals Whether She’ll Perform During Historic All-Female Space Flight

Pop star Katy Perry is set to make history as part of Blue Origin’s first all-female space mission, but fans wondering if she’ll sing in zero gravity will have to wait. The “Dark Horse” singer clarified her plans ahead of Monday’s launch, where she and five other women will briefly reach the edge of space.

The NS-31 mission, scheduled for April 14, will carry Perry, journalist Gayle King, and four others aboard Blue Origin’s New Shepard rocket. While the crew has trained extensively, Perry confirmed she won’t be belting out hits during the 11-minute flight.

Historic Crew Prepares for Launch

The six-woman team includes Perry, King, filmmaker Kerianne Flynn, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen, aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, and Lauren Sánchez, a journalist engaged to Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos. Their flight marks the first all-female crew since Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s 1963 solo mission .

New Shepard will launch from West Texas, reaching the Kármán line—62 miles above Earth—where space begins. Passengers will experience four minutes of weightlessness before returning via parachute .

Perry’s Space Suit and Pre-Flight Comments

Perry shared glimpses of the crew’s custom-designed flight suits by fashion label Monse. The sleek, flame-resistant outfits replace Blue Origin’s standard designs, with Sánchez noting they were tailored specifically for women.

“We’re putting the ‘a–’ in astronaut,” Perry joked in an interview, adding, “Space is going to finally be glam” .

Despite the playful tone, Perry emphasized the mission’s inspirational goal:

“I’m talking to myself every day and going, ‘You’re brave. You’re bold. You’re doing this to inspire so many different people, but especially young girls’” .

Why Perry Won’t Sing Mid-Flight

While Perry’s musical talents fueled speculation about a zero-gravity performance, the tight timeline and safety protocols make it unlikely. The crew will focus on securing their harnesses during ascent and descent, with only brief windows to float freely .

Blue Origin’s autonomous rocket requires no pilot, but passengers must follow strict procedures. Previous fliers, like William Shatner, described the experience as emotionally overwhelming, leaving little room for planned activities .

How to Watch the Launch

Coverage begins at 8:00 a.m. ET on Blue Origin’s website and YouTube, with liftoff at 9:30 a.m. ET. CBS and Paramount+ will also broadcast the event .
