Katy Perry recently discussed how she navigates negative reviews of her music and revealed a life-changing piece of advice from her therapist. The “Dark Horse” singer spoke with People magazine about her upcoming Lifetimes Tour, which supports her album “143,” and shared her strategy for dealing with critics.
A Therapist’s Advice Makes a Difference
Perry explained that she prefers not to read reviews, whether positive or negative. She shared a valuable lesson from her therapist: “My therapist said something that really changed my life.” The advice was to focus on her own satisfaction with her work and not be overly concerned with others’ opinions. This approach has helped Perry maintain her focus and creative vision throughout her career.
Perry emphasized that each album represents an artist’s personal growth and evolution. She hopes her latest album will resonate with listeners and become “the soundtrack for anyone’s life.” The “E.T.” singer revealed that becoming a mother influenced the creation of this album. She explained that motherhood helped her connect with her “divine” feminine energy, which inspired her to write songs celebrating love. Perry also noted that her identity shifted during the COVID pandemic, which contributed to her new music.
The “Roar” hitmaker described her latest album as a celebration of “unconditional love,” a concept she had been seeking throughout her life. “That was a cliché, and it’s actually true,” she shared.
Perry has faced criticism for her collaborations with Lukasz ‘Dr. Luke’ Gottwald amid his legal battle with Kesha. In a September appearance on the Call Me Daddy podcast, Perry addressed the situation, saying, “My experience of my whole life going through this metamorphosis, and he was one of the people to help facilitate all that,” referring to the producer behind some of her biggest hits like “I Kissed a Girl,” “California Gurls,” and “Teenage Dream.”
