Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige recently opened up about the decision to bring Robert Downey Jr. back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. The casting choice shocked many fans when it was first announced at San Diego Comic-Con in July 2024. Now, with the first trailer already breaking records and the movie set for a December release, Feige is sharing more details about why Downey Jr. was the right pick for one of Marvel’s most famous villains.
The Avengers: Doomsday trailer dropped on July 20, 2026, giving audiences their first real look at Downey Jr. as Victor Von Doom. The footage has already gathered more than 29 million views on YouTube. The movie brings together heroes from across the Marvel universe, including the Avengers, X-Men, and Fantastic Four, to face a threat unlike anything they have seen before.
What Kevin Feige Said About Casting Robert Downey Jr. As Doctor Doom
Feige spoke with Chinese press recently about the casting process for Doctor Doom. He explained that the studio was looking for the best actor available for the role.
“When we were casting for Doctor Doom, we said: we need to find the greatest actor in the world. Doctor Doom is one of the most interesting characters. He’s intelligent, has an extremely high IQ; he can be a villain, but he also sees himself as a hero. We went to see Oppenheimer—for which he won an Oscar—and we finally realized.”
Feige compared this situation to when Chris Evans was cast as Captain America back in 2011. Evans had previously played other Marvel characters, but that did not stop Feige from giving him the role of Steve Rogers.
“Just like when we were casting Captain America, we didn’t want to exclude Chris Evans just because he’d played other Marvel characters, and in this situation, we thought: how great, bold, and risky it would be to bring back our most famous hero to play our most famous villain. Thank goodness, he agreed.”
Robert Downey Jr.’s Reaction To The Doctor Doom Offer
When Feige approached Downey Jr. with the idea of playing Doctor Doom, the actor gave a response that captured exactly what Marvel was hoping for.
“His exact words were, ‘I played the best hero… I can play the best villain.’”
Feige also explained why Downey Jr. fits the character of Doctor Doom so perfectly.
“He’s a scientist, he’s a technologist, he’s a sorcerer and a ruler, and to embody that complexity, that tragedy, that charisma of the character.”
The Marvel boss made it clear that the studio did not want to simply bring Tony Stark back from the dead.
“We didn’t want to simply bring Tony Stark back. The ending of ‘Avengers: Endgame’ is one of our proudest moments, seeing the global audience’s reaction to Tony’s sacrifice. So we didn’t want him to just ‘magically’ return, but in Marvel, actors have many opportunities to return in entirely new ways.”
What We Know About Avengers Doomsday So Far
Avengers: Doomsday is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, who also helmed Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. The movie was originally scheduled for a May 2026 release but was pushed back to December 18, 2026.
The film brings back Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America. Several X-Men characters from the Fox films are also crossing over, including Professor Xavier, Magneto, Mystique, and Cyclops. The Fantastic Four and Thunderbolts teams are also part of the story.
The trailer shows Thor facing off against Doctor Doom. In one striking moment, Doom stops Thor’s axe Stormbreaker with just his fingers. This scene gives audiences a clear idea of how powerful this version of Doctor Doom really is.
Why This Casting Decision Makes Sense
Feige pointed out that Downey Jr. has the range to play a character as layered as Doctor Doom. The villain is not just evil for the sake of being evil. He is brilliant, believes he is doing the right thing, and has a tragic backstory that makes him more interesting than a typical bad guy.
In the comics, Doctor Doom’s mother made a deal with Mephisto, and Doom has spent much of his life trying to free her soul. The official poster for Avengers: Doomsday shows Doom looking at a tapestry of a woman and a child, which fans believe could be related to this comic book story.
Marvel is drawing from comic book storylines Time Runs Out and Secret Wars for Avengers: Doomsday and the following film, Avengers: Secret Wars.
“In ‘Avengers: Endgame,’ everyone united to fight Thanos. In ‘Avengers: Doomsday,’ the stakes are even higher: three different universes, three different Earths, are truly colliding with each other.”
Feige also addressed the scheduling conflict with Dune: Part Three, which releases on the same day.
“One of the jobs of a filmmaker is to ensure that a great many people go to the cinema, so on the one hand, the thought of theaters worldwide potentially being packed that weekend is certainly exciting.”
