The mystery surrounding Galadriel’s missing husband in The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has finally been solved. Jamie Campbell Bower, known for playing the terrifying Vecna in Stranger Things, will officially play Celeborn in Season 3 of the Prime Video series. The actor revealed that his performance draws directly from author J.R.R. Tolkien’s real-life relationship with his wife, Edith.
From Villain to Elf Lord
Bower spent years terrifying audiences as Vecna, the mind-flaying monster in Stranger Things. Now he is making a complete shift to play an Elven lord and warrior who shares a deep romantic connection with Galadriel, played by Morfydd Clark. The character was briefly seen in Peter Jackson’s films, played by Marton Csokas, but Bower’s version brings something new to the role.
Bower called his version of Celeborn a “lover-boy,” a description that stands in stark contrast to his previous work. The character has been missing from the show for two seasons, and fans have long wondered about his fate. In Season 1, Galadriel mentioned that her husband never returned from fighting Morgoth, leaving viewers to assume the worst.
Tolkien’s Own Love Story as Inspiration
When preparing for the role, Bower looked beyond the books to the author’s personal life. He found a powerful connection between Celeborn’s longing for Galadriel and Tolkien’s own experience of being separated from his wife, Edith.
Tolkien married Edith Bratt in 1916 and was soon sent to fight in France during World War I. The couple spent long periods apart, communicating mainly through letters. That separation and the yearning that came with it became the emotional foundation for Bower’s performance.
“This idea of longing and yearning is so pervasive in Tolkien’s relationship with Edith for the time that they were apart. I really feasted on that idea. Celeborn has had to find a way to survive whilst longing for something that he so dearly loved and so dearly missed as well.”
Bower explained that Celeborn has been surviving while carrying deep love and loss for someone he could not be with. That emotional weight shaped how he approached every scene.
Clark Praises Her New On-Screen Husband
Morfydd Clark, who plays Galadriel, had nothing but good things to say about working with Bower. She admitted that in the books, Galadriel is not always kind to Celeborn.
“She’s kind of rude to him in the books. She’s the queen! But Jamie looks exactly like how I would imagine Celeborn. He’s such an Elf.”
Clark’s comments suggest that the on-screen chemistry between the two actors is strong. The showrunners, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay, saw hundreds of audition tapes for Celeborn before choosing Bower. Even without the Elf ears and costume, they knew he was the right choice.
Payne described Bower’s voice as “rich and hypnotic and sonorous” with “the wisdom of the ages buried inside of it”. When Bower did a chemistry read with Clark, the connection was immediate.
“Instantly it just felt like he loved her so much. It felt so natural, and so organic, and so right.”

Season 3 of The Rings of Power will feature a time jump. The story moves forward several years from the events of Season 2 and takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron. The official synopsis confirms that Sauron will forge the One Ring during this season.
The season will have eight episodes and premieres on Prime Video on November 11, 2026. A teaser trailer is scheduled to debut during Prime Video’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Friday, July 24.
Filming for Season 3 ran from May 2025 through December 10, 2025. The production moved to Shepperton Studios in Surrey, a larger facility that Amazon secured for the series.
Alongside Bower, new cast members include Eddie Marsan (Sherlock Holmes), Andrew Richardson (Ponies), Zubin Varla (Andor), and Adam Young (Sex Education) in yet-to-be-revealed roles. Returning cast members include Charlie Vickers as Sauron, Robert Aramayo as Elrond, and Daniel Weyman as Gandalf.
Celeborn’s return after two seasons of absence will reshape Galadriel’s story in a major way. For a show built around war, betrayal, and the pursuit of power, this love story offers something different.
