WARNING: This article contains spoilers for the Season 4 finale of HBO’s ‘Industry.’
The final episode of ‘Industry’ Season 4 delivered some of the most jaw-dropping moments in the show’s history, and at the center of it all was Kiernan Shipka’s character Haley Clay. What started as a mysterious assistant role slowly revealed itself to be one of the most calculating players in the entire series. Now, Shipka is opening up about her character’s deceptive nature, her limits, and the complicated bond she forms with Yasmin (Marisa Abela) by the end of the season.
The Season 4 finale, titled “Both, And,” shows Yasmin fully transforming into a figure reminiscent of Ghislaine Maxwell, hosting high-end networking events for far-right politicians where she supplies young escorts to powerful men . Throughout this dark evolution, Haley stands right beside her. But according to Shipka, viewers should think twice before assuming Haley is simply following orders.
Haley’s True Nature: A Solo Operator
Kiernan Shipka describes her character as someone who is “incredibly duplicitous” and “incredibly deceptive” . While Haley may not technically hold a position of power in the traditional sense, she has a remarkable ability to find it and grab it for herself.
“I think she has a ton of agency,” Shipka told Deadline in a deep dive interview about the finale . “We’re watching her thinking that she is the one who is being taken advantage of, and I think she’s taken a lot of situations where she has been and figured out a way to use that to her benefit.”
Throughout the season, Haley’s loyalties seemed to shift. She started out appearing to be on “Team Whitney,” working closely with the Tender co-founder (Max Minghella). But as Yasmin entered the picture, that alliance clearly changed. However, Shipka warns that even this new bond with Yasmin might not be what it seems.
“At the end of the day, she doesn’t have allegiances to anyone,” Shipka explained . “I do, at the end of the day, think that she is a solo operator and will do whatever it takes to have the access and the power and the influence that she wants. I think the season definitely leans toward her having an allegiance with Yasmin. But I don’t know what Haley will stop at. I think she stops at nothing.”

The Tape, The Video Evidence, and What Haley Knows
One of the biggest lingering questions from the season involves a sex tape. Earlier in the season, Haley was present during a threesome with Henry (Kit Harington) and Yasmin. The question of whether she recorded the encounter or possesses any video evidence hung over the entire back half of the season.
Shipka admits she thought deeply about this specific plot point while developing the character. Would Haley actually use something like that as leverage?
“I thought about that a lot,” Shipka said . While her character claims the video is deleted, Shipka is not so sure audiences should take that at face value. “I think that she doesn’t have a lot of limits, though.”
This ambiguity adds another layer to the finale’s most painful scene. When Harper (Myha’la) makes one last desperate attempt to save Yasmin from her destructive path, showing her the tape of Eric (Ken Leung) with an underage escort as proof of how dark things have gotten, it is Haley who steps in . She harshly prompts Harper to leave, effectively slamming the door on any chance of reconciliation between the two former friends.
The Bond Between Haley and Yasmin
Despite Haley’s untrustworthy nature, there is an undeniable connection between her and Yasmin. Shipka believes this bond runs much deeper than simple workplace convenience.
“There’s some sort of cosmic, spiritual bond there, because they both have such deep, wretched histories with men,” Shipka explained in an earlier interview with Cosmopolitan . She noted that in many of their scenes together, there aren’t a lot of words exchanged. “But you can feel that they understand each other on a deeper level.”
Both characters have complicated, traumatic pasts involving men. While the show has explored Yasmin’s history with her father extensively, Haley’s background is hinted at but never fully explained. Shipka revealed that she created an entire backstory for Haley to make sense of her actions, one involving “complicated, tumultuous relationships with men” that are alluded to throughout the season .
This shared trauma creates a dark understanding between them. In the finale, when Yasmin justifies her actions by saying the world isn’t “exploitation or opportunity. It’s both/and,” she genuinely seems to believe she is protecting younger women by controlling their exploitation rather than leaving them vulnerable to worse predators . Haley, who has clearly survived her own battles, appears to understand this twisted logic on a fundamental level.
Putting Judgment Aside to Play Haley
For Kiernan Shipka, taking on this role required a specific mindset. The character does morally questionable things throughout the season, but Shipka approached the role without judgment.
“Playing someone like Haley, you kind of have to just put judgment aside when you’re doing it,” she told Vulture in a mid-season interview . “I also want to consider the fact that she is a human and she is thinking about these things and considering them and justifying the game that she’s playing.”
Shipka acknowledged that Haley is young and has been chasing something her entire life. Now that she’s finally getting it, she is “sort of cutthroat and heartless about it.” But the actress was careful not to portray her as a complete monster without any internal conflict.
“I also don’t want to think of her as a person who doesn’t have a heart and isn’t conflicted by these things,” she said .
What’s Next for Haley?
With ‘Industry’ Season 5 now confirmed to be the final season, the stage is set for even higher stakes. The finale showed Harper on a private jet, being interviewed by a real New Yorker journalist, while Yasmin and Haley’s operation seems to be growing . The final moments even feature Harper echoing Yasmin’s “both/and” philosophy, suggesting the two former friends may be headed for an even bigger confrontation.
Where does Haley fit into all of this? Shipka believes her character will continue to be unpredictable.
“I think the season definitely leans toward her having an allegiance with Yasmin,” Shipka said. “But I don’t know what Haley will stop at” .
Given that Haley has proven herself willing to do whatever it takes to maintain her access and influence, the final season could see her loyalties shift once again. After all, as Shipka put it, “she is not the most trustworthy.”
