Kim Soo-hyun, featured on the February 2025 cover of Esquire Korea, shared details about his upcoming drama, Knock-Off, in a recent interview. He offered insights into his character, Kim Seong-jun, and the drama’s overarching themes.
Kim Soo-hyun Discusses His Character in Knock-Off
During the Esquire Korea interview, Kim Soo-hyun addressed questions about his role as Kim Seong-jun in Knock-Off. The interviewer noted that this character seemed more ordinary compared to his previous roles, such as a king, an alien, and a top law student. Kim Soo-hyun confirmed that Seong-jun is indeed an ordinary office worker who faces numerous challenges. He also mentioned that Seong-jun is a graduate of a prestigious university.
Kim Soo-hyun stated:
“That’s true, but come to think of it, Kim Seong-jun is still portrayed as a graduate of a prestigious university. The filming is about halfway through, and the process of how Kim Seong-jun overcomes the challenges he faces has been fascinating. We even filmed on location in Hong Kong, where there was a special encounter I can’t reveal just yet, so please stay tuned!”
He further described the drama’s theme, explaining that it explores how humans can become “knock-offs” through life’s experiences. He said:
“This time, it’s a human drama. It depicts the journey of an ordinary office worker, Kim Seong-jun (played by Kim Soo-hyun), as he overcomes various crises and fights to survive. Through this process, the story ultimately shows how humans themselves become “knock-offs,” with perhaps every character in the drama arriving at that conclusion in life.”
Kim Soo-hyun’s Acting Philosophy and Preparation
Kim Soo-hyun also shared his philosophy on acting, developed over his 18-year career. He believes that acting is about moving the audience’s hearts.
He explained:
“I learned that acting is ultimately about moving the hearts of the audience. The audience knows how much research the actor has done, what their physical condition is, how well they work with other actors, and how well the role fits the actor’s body, eyes, nose, and mouth. All of those details have to fit together for the audience to be able to feel it.”
He added:
“I try not to forget that I can move hearts, start by burying Kim Soo-hyun in the character in the script so that it feels right. After that, it’s just repetition, repetition, and long practice.”
He mentioned using this same approach when preparing for his role in Queen of Tears, where he played Baek Hyun-woo.
Knock-Off Drama Details
Knock-Off is set to premiere in April 2025 on Disney+. The drama will be released in two parts, each consisting of nine episodes. Jo Bo-ah stars alongside Kim Soo-hyun as the female lead. The drama is about an ordinary office worker, Kim Seong-jun, who faces many challenges.
