A Korean drama that captured headlines for its astronomical budget of 50 billion KRW (approximately 34.9 million USD) has unfortunately plummeted to record-low ratings after just five episodes. “When the Stars Gossip,” the tvN weekend drama, premiered with promising numbers but has since experienced a steep decline in viewership, reaching a mere 1% rating nationwide for its fifth episode.
This is a significant drop, considering the drama’s strong start. Debuting at 3.3%, “When the Stars Gossip” even reached a peak of 3.9% during its second episode. However, the ratings dipped to 2.2% by the third episode and haven’t recovered since. This troubling trend makes “When the Stars Gossip” only the second tvN weekend drama to fall below the 1% mark since the weekend drama slot’s introduction in 2017.
While “When the Stars Gossip” struggles, competing dramas are thriving. KBS2’s “Iron Family” holds the top spot with a solid 17.4% rating, followed by SBS’s “Love Scout” at 11.4%. JTBC’s “The Tale of Lady Ok” and MBC’s “Motel California” secured decent ratings of 8.4% and 3.6% respectively, while Channel A’s “Check-In Hanyang” also managed a 2.5% rating.
Particularly noteworthy is “Love Scout,” which has seen a steady rise in popularity. This weekend miniseries not only achieved a nationwide rating of 11.4% for its sixth episode but also claimed the top spot among viewers aged 20-49, solidifying its place as the most-watched show in Korea and leader in 123 countries worldwide.
So, what went wrong for “When the Stars Gossip?” Despite its captivating premise of a space-station romance starring A-list actors Gong Hyo Jin and Lee Min Ho, the drama has been criticized for its lack of originality and weak plot. Viewers have expressed disappointment online, citing slow pacing and a predictable storyline as major turn-offs. In contrast, dramas with smaller budgets, like “The Tale of Lady Ok” and “Motel California,” have garnered positive responses for their engaging narratives.
The latest episode offered a glimpse of hope with the confession scene between Gong Ryong and Eve Kim, coupled with the unveiling of a secret plot. However, with only 11 episodes remaining, “When the Stars Gossip” faces an uphill battle to win back audiences and rewrite its narrative from costly misstep to unforgettable success.
Will the drama manage to turn things around? Only time will tell, but one thing’s for sure: the Korean drama landscape is a fiercely competitive one, and viewers are demanding high-quality stories that capture their imaginations.
