Lee Jung Jae, known worldwide for his role in Netflix’s Squid Game, is reportedly making his comeback to Korean dramas with the new series Annoying Love. This will mark his first appearance in a Korean drama in five years, following his role in Chief of Staff 2 in 2019.

Lee Jung Jae’s Role in “Annoying Love”

According to OSEN, Lee Jung Jae recently received the script for Annoying Love and is seriously considering taking on the lead role. He is expected to play Im Hyun-jun, a seasoned actor famous for his portrayal of a righteous detective, Kang Pil-gu, in the hit series Good Detective Kang Pil-gu.

“Hyun-jun is preparing to shoot season 5 of the show. However, he struggles with burnout after years of playing the same role and desperately wants to transform his image with romantic comedies or melodramas,” the report states.

The drama’s plot revolves around a washed-up actor forced back into the spotlight and a former political journalist turned entertainment reporter. With sharp wit and fiery character dynamics, the series promises both humor and depth.

Behind the Scenes: Writer and Production

Annoying Love is written by Jeong Yeo-rang, whose debut drama Doctor Cha achieved a remarkable 18.5% viewership rating. Her work received widespread praise for its high-quality writing.

The drama will be directed by Kim Ga-ram, known for Good Partner, and produced by Studio & New, with broadcasting channel discussions currently underway.

Lee Jung Jae’s Recent Projects

During his time away from Korean dramas, Lee Jung Jae expanded his portfolio significantly:

  • Made his directorial debut with the film Hunt (2022).
  • Played a special role in Revolver (2024).
  • Starred in Disney+’s global series The Acolyte (2024).

Lee Jung Jae’s return to Korean dramas comes amidst the buzz surrounding Squid Game Season 2, set for a worldwide release on December 26. Filming for Season 3 has already been completed.

Production Timeline

The production for Annoying Love is set to begin in 2025, raising anticipation for Lee Jung Jae’s next performance.
